244 doesn't start 200 1982

I have pored over the posts and FAQs on this forum and really appreciate all the fine info I've come across. However, I'm stumped and need a bit of help.

We bought our first Volvo a couple of weeks ago, an '82 244 DL. It's a nice solid car and we enjoyed it even though the main fuel pump fuse would blow every once in a while. Well, a couple of days ago when it stalled on the highway we assumed it was the fuse again, but it was okay and yet the car wouldn't start. Only after removing a spark plug (the one closest to the front of the car) to check for spark did it start. I turned the engine off, replaced the plug, and it started right up and off we went.

Well, after getting home okay, it wouldn't start unless I removed the spark plug, and then eventually that didn't work anymore. So, now the car will not start at all.

I've followd most of the troubleshooting procedures I have read on this forum and determined the following:

The fuel pump relay appears to be OK, although the pump works when the key is in START position, but not in the RUN position. I jumpered the fusebox so the main fuel pump would run before the key was turned, but the car did not start.

There is spark at the plugs when the key is in the START position. Gas is getting to the cylinders, I can smell it on the plugs. In fact, when the key is in the START position and I pump the gas, the engine revs up fine (not great for the starter), but as soon as I release the key, the engine dies. I could feel the fuel pump relay click off when I released the key.

That's about all I can do to figure this puzzle out. If anyone has some ideas, I'd really like to hear them and try them out, as this car is our primary transportation right now.

    Hello,

My 82 had a similar problem. If you have a Chrysler ignition (white distributor cap) read my old post below:

I have an 82 MPG with Chrysler ignition (white distributor cap) and it does not have a Ballest resistor. The voltage comes from fuse post 11 (hot side) to a 2 plug connector on the passenger firewall (blue wire) and then it goes to the coil term #15 (brown wire) via a 1 plug connector. I have had two occasions in the last ten years were that connectors has corroded out and blocked the 12volts to the coil. When I cleaned the connectors, the car ran great. This connector is located were the ballest used to be according to my Volvo green book. Find that connector and clean it up. It seems to be a problem unique to 82. Hope that helps.

If you have the above situation you can bypass the connector by connecting a wire from the battery + terminal to the #15 terminal of the coil (brown wire) and see if the car runs. If you have Bosch cap (red) check the wiring at the ballest resistor and make sure the ballest tests ok. You can use the voltage jumper to the coil with the Bosch to see if it starts, just don't leave it on or you might damage the coil. It makes no differance on the Chrysler, but the jumper lead is not fused so it should be temporary. Hope this helps.

    Mario

Mario, I want to thank you for your helpful message. After jumpering the positive terminal of the battery to terminal 15 on the coil, the car fired up just fine. After spending hours and hours working on the car, the sound of the engine finally starting was truly music to my ears.

It appears that we also have an '82 MPG with Chrysler ignition. Tomorrow, I will find the suspect pigtail connector in front of the passenger firewall and try to clean the connectors, or run a new wire directly from the brown wire at the pigtail to the coil, as you suggest.

      Thanks again for the help.

That's great! I sent you a photo of the connector via E-mail (don't know how to post on board) which should make it easier to find.
