Rough Idling 900 1993

Just had a manifold gasket replaced and now the car runs much more smoothly than before when accelerating. But now I notice that it idles extremely roughly---and outside the car when it is idling you can hear a bit of a rattle that vibrates through the back. Any ideas as to where to begin checking things out? Much appreciated.

    Rough Idling 900 1993

    Dear wcbisrael,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. Have you cleaned / had cleaned, the Idle Air Control Valve. This is located beside/beneath the intake manifold (driver's side of the engine, USA/Canada models). It is secured by two hex bolts. It is connected to two black rubber hoses, secured with hose clamps. There is one electrical connector, at the end pointing towards the firewall.

When dirty, this valve does not operate smoothly. That can cause rough idle. Remove it, and clean it using carb (not brake) cleaner. You can use cotton-tipped swabs. Be sure to flush out any cotton fibers. Lubricate with WD-40 or similar lightweight lubricant (i.e., not engine oil or similarly viscous lube).

See the FAQs, under FEATURES, above.

It is also the case that worn spark plug wires can cause persistent rough running. If the roughness disappears. A vacuum leak can also contribute to rough idling/running.

    Hope some of this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook
