Woohoo!!! It's finally priced right... 200

Hello All,

We all know of the resistor-in-a-box trick to install on your supposed intake air temperature sensor to give more power. Finally, someone who is just shamelessly selling the resistor with no fan fare or b.s.

Check out the expert clean installation options!!!

He even has the price right!!!

ok, i definitely need more info on this, as i was gonna change that out on my daughter's '85 244 DL soon, so, please tell me more! thanks, louis, PS, we've only had this car for a few weeks, and i'm tryin to get the most out of e what we have, i:e:, a cold air intake, possibly(if that's a good idea), so please tll me more about this mod. i wil check out the URL you have listed, is it something you would recommend changin anyway, after almost 237,000 miles?? it was maticulously maintained UNTIL the last kid got hold of it, so, i've been makin repairs on-the-go, if you now what i mean! and please tell me more about the"resistor in a box trick, please! thanks in advance, louis

      Okay,

If you want more power out of your 240, supposed "chips" and "cold air intakes" will do nothing. To get real results, you need real performance parts.

A measure of success can be obtained by updating all your replaceables and making sure everything is in tune. Proper Bosch ignition cap/rotor/spark plugs. Bougicord wires. New air & fuel filter. Don't buy any of it from PepBoys or Walmart. Get it from FCPGroton.com

Beyond that, I'd suggest a VX camshaft upgrade from IPD. Good time to replace the timing belt and do a valve adjustment too. Then the Turbo exhaust upgrade. Sub out the 2 resonators for a straight pipe and the free flowing muffler meant for 240 turbo's. You'll still pass your emissions test as well.

Beyond that, do we really want our teenage kids driving 200 hp rockets? I think not. A little more power is good for safety, too much is dangerous in the hands of the inexperienced. Never in a million years would I hand over the keys to my 850 Turbo to one of my kids.

"Resistor in a box", performance chip, etc, call it what you will it's a scam. It's not something to concern yourself with on your car: the theory here is that the air temp sensor (which we 240 drivers don't have, except as a function of the air mass meter) gives a resistance value that varies depending on temperature (a simple thermisistor). Find out what resistance value applies to cold air, ie 32F, for a given sensor, because at that ambient temp the engine will bump up timing a bit because of the lower potential for pre-ignition (cooler air=better performance). That's the theory. So by unhooking the temp sensor & replacing it with a fixed impedance resistor the ECU applies the engine management program for 32F and you gain power because the timing's bumped up(THEORETICALLY!). However I do not expect theory translates into practice here - there are also issues of mixture (& the relative density of fuel at different temps) to consider. And the knock sensor would be bumping the timing back down, and dumping fuel to lower combustion chamber temps (loss of power, in effect). Certainly not something I'd do to any car of mine, even if it was applicable to my vehicle. In a nutshell, just smile & nod & be glad you weren't the guy who paid $75 for a $0.10 component that defeats the engineering of your engine management system...

And since they provided a very nice picture of the resistor, should be able ot go to the local electronics part store and save the $5.00 shipping charge. And probably get a package of 4 for less than $.99.

And take the photo with you to the electronics parts outlet, so they can scratch their heads about what value to sell you.

Can someone go into further detail about this. This is the first I've heard about it.

      Thanks

          Okay,

This does not apply to older 200's. I'd be kind of surprised if it applied to any Volvo, but these jokers who have been selling this kind of product have been the subject of much ridicule in this forum.

The theory is that the resistor confuses the ECU to shoot a more fuel-heavy mixture, and therefore you get more power. Supposedly. Maybe 10 Hp. Are you going really feel that??? Not likely. 200's don't have an air temp sensor. I guess your could wire a resistor into the coolant temp sensor, but I doubt it would have any positive effect on the car.

Main point here being some losers will put that resistor into a box, attach some wires, put a fancy sticker on it, call it god's miracle for your car and soak you 75 bucks for it.
