sloppy steering 1986 n/a sedan 700

What causes sloppy steering? Steering is not tight, while driving straight down the road, there seems to be a little play it the steering wheel from side to side. Is this a worn steering rack problem or are there other possibilities.

I had the same problem in my '86 turbo 740 wagon. Things to look at.

Inner and outer tie rods, ball joints, steering rack, intermediate steering shaft (u-joints). All could be source of play at the wheel.

Hope it helps narrowing the possibilities.
