What should I offer? 200 1993

I'm looking at buying a 93 240 automatic, with 155K miles.
Tranny is good, no leaks. Engine runs well, but appears to need a head gasket (leaks). Brakes are spongy, a lot of travel in the pedal, but once you get it to the floor, they stop the car fine, I'm thinking they need bled.
It spent some winters in NY, and has some surface rust below the doors that looks minor, but one of the rear doors is all rusted out at the bottom. The red paint is pretty faded, but other than that the body is good.
Gas gauge doesn't work. In genderal, it seems maintenance was done on time. Owner knows little about cars, but kept all maintenance records.

Anyway, he's asking 3600, but blue book is 3300. I was thinking of offering between 2000 and 2500, and not really wanting to go any higher. I do have a mechanic friend who can help with the work thats beyond my abilities, and a red 93 parts car to pull from. So what do you all think this car is worth? Keep in mind I need a new car relatively soon and I'd really prefer a 93 (I like the ABS). Thanks!

    Well, I offered him 2600, he said he wants 3200, so no car for me. I'd have gone a little higher, but its not worth that much, not with the work it needs. I told him to call me if it doesnt sell. Anybody got a 93 sedan they want to sell me?

      I just recently bought a 1988 wagon with 265K on it that is nearly perfect for $2700. It had two owners the first one being the original owner who took great care of it and the second being the owner of an independant Volvo shop. The second owner spent almost 7k in repairs and upgrades on the car. I would "wait it out" on the seller. Make a fair cash offer and give him your contact information. Not many people will be interested in a vehicle that needs major service and the problem may worsen and also make it more difficult for him to sell the car. You may get a phone call from the seller when he gets tired of the tire kickers.

      Volvo sedans especially 240's don't fetch a lot of money here where I live. I drove a really nice 1993 Volvo 240 Sedan for $1,100 a few months ago. If it had been a wagon I would have bought it.

    hi there, i run from rust any rust at all. maybe fly south and drive a good one home. the price seems high for rust and head gasket. good luck

    In my opinion rust drops the price drastically. I wouldn't offer more than $1000-1500 with the rust, bad paint, and other prob. You might want to look at bit longer, its spring and more cars will come on the market. You won't have to go too far, from what I hear the Philly suburbs are full of them. In my area I saw a super clean orig owner 93 240 with 140K and no prob, asking $3200 about a month ago. Good luck.

    I wouldn't go over 2500. My brother bought a '91 in great condition for 2800. Hard to say without seeing it though.

    Where are you and the car currently located? If you're still in NY or the north, then a little rust is acceptable and $2500 would be about right (the highest one should probably go for it). However, if the car is in the South or somewhere where rust isn't normally a problem, then I think the owner is expecting way too much from this car.

    A 1993 240 is nice, but there's no reason to go that high if it's rusted. If you're in an area where you can probably find a 240 with less rust if you just look around for a little longer, I would think this car shouldn't go for over $2000.

      Unfortunately, I'm stuck in central PA. Not much interest in Volvos up here, so the pickins are slim. Theres actually a 544 in decent shape for sale, 500 bucks with spare engine and lots of parts, and I think I'm the only one that even looked at it. Its still for sale, close to 6 months later (and I still want it).
      Anyway, I think Im gonna be stuck with at least some rust. I'd love a good southern car (like my last one), but I don't think it'll happen right now.

    The 93s always seem to go for more. But considering all the things wrong you mentioned, I'd say around 2500 seems reasonable.

    I'd check to see if the floor pan under the drivers and passengers seats is rusted

    then, if it is, drop your offer considerably or bail altogether...

    rocker panel drain holes clog with leaves (from the front windshield vents), fill with water, rust through to the interior, soak the carpets then eventually the water drains out after the floor rusts through.
