Oil Change Frequency - 3K or 5K?

Oil change frequency at 3,000 or 5,000 Miles?

Are you changing engine oil at 3K intervals or at 5K intervals -- or perhaps at some other interval?

Thanks!

    Oil Change Frequency - 3K or 5K?

    Attempt #2 to write this.

In my Honda, I do 5K since it does long trips. The Volvo get short trips so it's changed on time intervals of 6 months.

Many folks consider 3K to be a waste since, as Steve points out, there have been many advances in oil technology. But it's going to depend on the trips you take, local ambient temps etc.

www.bobistheoilguy.com has a heap of info too--worth checking out.

5k minimum on Mobil 1, usually 7.5k if I do mostly highway driving. Modern oils can last a lot longer. The old rule about every 3k was based on the oils available in the sixties with few additives and poor viscosity control.

    Oil Change Frequency - 3K or 5K?

Personally I change oil and filter at 3K intervals. Synthetic oil, Volvo filter. Reasons?
    - I only drive around 6K a year and like to have new oil put in twice a year.
    - With mostly short trips on this car, condensation and contaminations accumulate in the oil, particularly during the winter season.
    - I am a pessimist by nature and love this car. Wouldn't like something bad happen to it.

      Oil Change Frequency - 3K or 5K?

I change my oil every 2500 miles. It makes for easy math when on a 5K service schedule. I recommend my customers do the same thing, 2.5K on regular oil and 5k on synthetic. With customers I recommend this because if you tell them to come in every 2.5K you are doing good to see them in 4K and if you tell them 5K then it rapidly becomes 8-10K in pretty short order. If you go too long between services, among other things, it becomes tough to monitor stuff like brake pads and the like. It is easy to look at the pads and say yea or nay on whether the will make it to the next service but when the next service might not be for 10K or until next year some time it gets a little tough. Oil changes are pretty cheap insurance against a whole host of evils that can befall your car. If your speedo is broke then I simply recommend coming in every four months and have it changed out. It runs about $40.00 for a straight up oil change and safety inspection in my shop, $160.00 per year is a bargain if you ask me. I even know of a couple of shops that have gone to the lifetime free oil change program. You buy the program up front for $200.00-$300.00 and then you are locked in for 4 oil changes a year. The changes will be done at absolutely no cost to you 4 times a year. When you pencil out on paper and factor in advertising and people who go to Jiffy Lube instead it is actually a winner for the shop owner to give the oil changes away just to keep the customer in house!!

        Oil Change Frequency - 3K or 5K?

        Hello,
        On my 1986 740 estate,
I change my oil and filter at 3,000 miles as I am only using castrol GTX magnatek semi synthetic 10w 40. I used Mobil 1 once but it was dearer and very difficult to get hold of where I live. The castrol oil is £19.00 in the UK for 4.5 litres, which is quite expensive when you change it every 3,000 miles. Only another 2,000 miles until its new oil and volvo filter change.
I am going to France in my 740 in a couple of days, so wont be on the forum as I dont have internet access at my Grandparents holiday home.
