I am wanting to put a roof rack on my 544 to transport my kayak and mountain bike and was wondering if anyone has made one or if there is a setup already made?

Thought all would like to see a Swedish original folding 444/544 roof rack. It weighs 23 lbs and was likely used to transport Swedish military Kronan bikes! Pardon the dust - this is my next project car!

I have a Yakima on my 122 and it fits a PV just fine! The optional wind deflector reduces wind noise quite a bit. I have the standard height stands. The 48" crossbars are round steel covered with polyethylene.

Made a cradle for my standup bass. Always use a cover, a bass is a real load to haul off the top of the car when it is full of water. Also very hard to get smashed butterflys off it too!

For the reason that Christopher points out, the high roof crown, I've found that "Quik-N-Easy" clamps are the most effective and economical solution. I essence you built whatever carrier you want on top of the clamps. The only draw-back to them is that you have to add some extra protection where they clamp to the gutters. The stuff they add at the factory is nothing to cheer about.

They were around, they have asymmetrical supports so they sit square on the roof, I have one up in my workshop roof. However I'm in Belgium at the moment giving the 940 a continental workout and won't be home until late on the 29th

Since I have been driving my 544/444 since 1983 and spent most of my adult as a bicycle distributor to Bike shops. I have had many racks and attachments on my PV. The dome is quite "high" so many roof racks that connect to the rain gutter need to be also high enough to clear the top. I put on a "Saris" rack and used #4 brackets and the short 51" load bars. Once the bars are on securely, you can put many attaching brackets on from bike racks for complete bikes (front wheel attached" to just wheels only. Along with this you can have kayaks and canoes and surfboards upside down or open side up. Or, my favorite, the "coffin". The coffin holds a huge amount of stuff and spare parts when you're not sure what to bring on a long trip. Same rack with different clips will go on my 1800ES and I've had 6 bikes on that for a trip to New Hampshire a few years ago.

Check out your local bike shop and see what they have to offer. Thule and Yakima both make great racks and they probably have a universal model that would work just fine for your application.

Yeah - I've been thinking about getting a rack for bikes for my PV. They certainly have rain-gutter mount feet - I'm not sure if you would need an extra high tower to clear the domed roof or not - the PV has more arch than a Beetle does. But you could certainly get something that fits properly and securely. In addition to bike mounts they sell all sorts of attachments - kayaks, wire cages, weather proof cargo pods, etc.
