Gas fumes 700

I have a 1990 760 turbo wagon, and I've noticed lately that when my car starts up, I begin to smell gas fumes. I don't really smell them too much inside the car when I'm driving, but when i turn it off and get out it's very noticeable...THe smell doesn't go away once the car is shut off, even after a few hours, and its very noticeable when you pop the hood. It seems to be mostly on the driver's side; I believe the fuel line is located on that side? It's been happening on and off for the last couple weeks, but the last few days its gotten stronger, and is constant.

I'm taking it in on Monday to have it checked out, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas what it could be? I'm thinking a hose or something may be loose? I was able to get an appt soon, and I know that this isn't a good thing, but I am concerned with driving it with these fumes; is it dangerous?

Any insight is appreciated!

You should check the condition/age of the gas cap. If it is suspect, it is easy enough to install a new one.
Also check the lines and connections on the charcoal cannister. It's the gizmo that deals with fumes from the gas tank. A lot of times the lines become loose or cracked, and you can smell gas fumes.
The cannister is about the size of a large coffee can and black with three vacuum lines coming out of the top. Mine is located in front of the air box in the engine compartment on the drivers side. Don't know if it is in the small spot with the turbo equipped cars.

my 87 had a smell aswell, two things I did was go thru and replaced the fuel inj seals. I also went in and replaced the line connecting the fuel pump and the fuel filter. After that my fuel milage jumped up and the smell went by by. now all I smell is burnt plastic that rapped around my cat converter.

Thanks, I have noticed that it seems like all i do is fill up my car, but I thought it's because I sit in bumper to bumper traffic every morning for about 15 miles, but i wonder if it's related to the fume issue.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the mechanic says!

I never saw it drip, I had replaced all the other gas lines except that one. You can pick it up at the dealers for around 30 bucks. If your mechanic can put it up in the air and get under it he should be able to locate it. Good luck
