745 steering issue 700 1988

Now that winter's gone and the roads are clear again, I can get to tracking down Sigue's (88 745GLE) latest thing. The steering has picked up a strange "variable effort" feeling--it's stiff, then light, then stiff while turning, in either direction. Boost is inconsistent throughout the turning radius. He's also started chewing up the left front tire--irregular wear around the outside tread. My gut is telling me it's a tie rod, but I don't recall the inrregular boost from the PS the last time Sigue needed tie rods. Any thoughts?

Chris J.

My 1988 745 Turbo (also in MI) steering does the exact same thing, but does not have any unusual tire wear. Others have said this is "morning sickness" and a sign the rack is having issues. Mine doesn't leak and the variable boost feeling always goes away after a minute or so, so I'm leaving it alone. I've experienced worn tie rods on my 240 and there was no irregularity to the steering effort, just shaking and poor directional control.

My in-laws 940 Sedan has a similar problem and my Volvo guy says it's a symtom of the rack going, if i'm using the proper verbage. Probably not something you wanted to hear, sorry. I could be wrong as I'm no expert by any means, just speaking from experience.
