Plan to clean my breather box tomorrow - a quick question or two 700 1989

Tomorrow I plan to remove and clean the breather box on the side of the B230FT. I read a caution mentioned in the FAQ's about NOT dis-lodging a tube.

I presume this is the tube that goes down into the sump - right? Is there any gasket that I need to get before I do this? Is this tube really easy to dis-lodge?

Any hints / experience appreciated. Saturday work can be scary. If I mess up - no dealer open close by.

Thanks
Andrew

Plan to clean my breather box tomorrow - a quick question or two 700 1989

Hi Andy,

It really is a piece of cake! Just remove the hose and the two bolts that hold the oil separator on. Lift straight up (I wonder who thought of putting this under the worst part of the intake?) and move it out from under the intake.

Soaking in kerosene removes more junk that anything else I've found, but I haven't tried boiling one yet.

Regards,

You can't really service the bb; it's a replace only thing. It does not come apart and if yours is blocked you need a new one.

Personally, I've found the tube very hard to pull out, accidentally or otherwise. YMMV,however.
There's an o-ring under the box, and the aforementioned tube has an O-ring moulded ito the top; last time I changed one I used some goo called "the right stuff" from Permatex on the block surface and the grooves in the box, and, so far(4 months), it's dry as a bone. The reason for the goo was that both the o-ring and the tube were hard as rocks, and I didn't feel like replacing the tube too.

That be good info.

So it can be cleaned ?? ...sstef (above post) says no, but it sounds like you have ...and I was sure that I read you could.

It can be cleaned, plug one end and squirt a healthy helping of your favorite throttle body cleaner in, plug the other end and shake (the box not you...) Drain and repeat several times till it all comes out clear. You will get a huge amount of junk out of it, likely.

There is an o-ring that seals the box to the top of the tube at the block, after you get the bolts out just twist and pull gently to make sure you are not pulling the tube up. Easier with the intake manifold off, but not necessary.
