Interchangeable body parts between 140/240? VIN placement?

I was looking at a 1972 144 and a late 70's 240 today. It looks like the horizontal joint where the front fenders meet the substructure is different, the hood is different and the front of the car is longer on the 240. Has anyone ever put 140 front sheet metal on the front of a 240? I do understand that the doors are interchangeable. Also, where are the VIN locations on both cars? Are the VIN's stamped into the body shell anywhere or are they all done with riveted or screwed on tags?

Brian

Interchangeable body parts between 140/240? VIN placement?

VINs are stamped, and the 140 front end is shorter than the 240 front end. Some cutting/welding will be necessary.

On the flip side, a 240 front end can fit over a 140 "frame".

As the 164s have a longer wheelbase, that cannot easily swap over onto a 240 without even more cutting/welding.

Center at firewall and behind the passenger door on the A-pillar.
