PV Body Used As Trailer 444-544

A post in the 1800 department revived this nutty notion of mine -- it also got a gentle nudge when we were talking about teardrop trailers a while ago.
A couple of years ago I saw on a European, probably Dutch, site a picture of a very nice looking camping trailer, made from the rear 3/4 of a PV, being towed by another PV. I've been searching for this picture, but I can't find it back. Has anyone else seen it? I know where I can find a PV with a smashed nose, and I'm tempted to try something like that, but it seems to me that the rear wheels on a PV are located too far back to do for a trailer -- too much weight on the hitch. Hence my interest in having another look at that picture. Any help, comments, suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob S.

    You can ask Bas de Koning (see www.veterancar.nl, top left corner) who built a camping trailer of a Duett.

    Good luck
    Willem

      Thanks, Willem. I sent him an e-mail in my mangled Dutch -- hope he understood it. At any rate, there are a couple of Duetts beyond salvation at the same place where I found the PV with the crushed nose. That could be another option. Maybe even a better one.

    Bob;

    I suggest you post on Volvoniacs and ask about it...if you have trouble with the foreign language, let me know...

    Cheers

      Thanks, Ron, good idea, and I'll work on my courage to get it up to a level where I might try. Ausserdem ist es für mich keine fremde Sprache weil meine Frau aus Pottsdam ist und mir damit auch hilfen kann, nur muss ich natürlich ganz lieb fragen.

        Bob;

        In that case, it sounds like between the two of you, you have the communications well covered!

        Cheers and Gruesse!

          It should be rather pretty, if you can come up with a plan to make the chopped-off-at-the-firewall nose look good. Plenty of 'bed' room inside, for sure!

          Since you're removing so much wieght in the form of engine, front frame horns, front suspension, fuel tank, etc. it shouldn't be too far out of balance when you're done. If all else fails, add some sections of railroad track rail to the trunk to arrive at a workable balance.

            My first choice would be to use the PV.
            The first thing I would do is to build a frame, preferable using the rear axle of the PV. You can then locate the wheel a little more to the middle. a feet or so, depending on how large you want the trailer to be. The negative side on moving the wheels is that you have to move the fenders too, or lengthen them.

            Then I would have made a plywood-based floor, to lower the weight.
            That means the only thing that I would have to use from the PV is the empty shell. I wouldn't use the floor of the PV due to the weight and topology.

            And after that I would have welded the whole thing together...
            I would have replace the trunk hatch with something else too,
            no need for a heavy metal piece there.

              Inge,
              Thanks for the suggestions. Pretty much what I was thinking, except for the repositioning of the rear wheels and fenders. That would pretty much ruin the lines of the body, and filling in the hollow areas left by moving the fenders would be difficult to bring off gracefully. The idea of keeping the rear suspension in place also appeals to me. The trailing arms could probably be attached to a subframe if most of the metal floor were replaced with plywood. It would be ideal if one could hinge the rear hatch above the window and make an accessible galley (for cooking) as in the teardrop trailers.

              Steve,
              For front-end treatment I'm thinking of making a rounded fiberglass shell to fit over a welded frame that would give rigidity to that area after windshield and ,perhaps, most of the firewall have been removed. Oh well, most likely the whole thing will just stay, as I said, a nutty notion.
              Bob S.
