wagon sway bar swap 700 1986

I want to put a sway bar on the rear of my 86 740td wagon that didn't come with one from the factory.
What models/years/size should I be looking for in the boneyard, and are there any sdditional pieces that I need to grab while I'm at it?

Thanks---------

There are only 2 types of sway bars out there on live axle 700/900. 16mm and 19mm. No 700 wagons had rear sway bar so you have to pull one from a sedan. A few 940s and 960s had a 16mm bar. Also grab the 2 little brackets where the sway bar attaches. Bring a measuring tool to make sure you are getting the 19mm. Some bars are really crusy with dirt and oil so you have to scrape all that off to get a good reading. I used a small ruler and a monkey wrench to measure. The model of sedan won't tell you what kind of bar it has on the back. It changed from year to year. I found 740 turbos with 16mm bar and 760 diesel with 19 mm so go figure. 3mm doesn't sound like much but the 19mm bar is twice as stiff as the 16mm bar. Im upgrading my 960 wagon from 16 to 19 and ditching the nivomats.

My 940 has a rear sway bar -though I'm think one on the front would be nice.

You can pickup a cheap sliding caliper measure from the hardware store ('though metric is tricky) to get the most acurrate measurement.

Six Volvos: all wagons.... 1972 145S, 1976 245 DL, 1983 245 GL, 1986 740 GLE, 1990 740 GL, now a 1995 940. Number 7 (a 1967 122S Wagon) is on the way.... Who needs a sedan, when you've got storage compartments in a wagon?

You can find digital calipers on eBay for roughly $20.

AFAIK all 200/700/900 series Volvos came from the factory with front bars. The 940s managed to get rear bars on the wagons (along with even beefier front bars). The 700s were an anomoly that way. Quite frankly the addition of even a 19mm rear bar with no other modifications really brings the handling in check without inducing oversteer.

All US delivery sedans had a rear sway bar. You need the brackets at the end which hold the rear sway bar bolt.

Yep, a turbo may have a marginaly thicker bar. With teh bar in, shock changes will now take a little more effort, so if yours arent fresh, do it now. I did this, and my 745 feels like a smaller car. I drove my friends no sway bar wagon, and it felt broken! Your efforts will be rewarded.
