140 front end in a 444 140-160

Yes, I have a 444 with a 140 front cross member. I bought a pair of outer steering links for a 140 on Ebay but the nut is much larger on my original than the replacements. I have alot of "squeeking" when I turn so I popped off the large nutted one and, only at that point, I discover my replacements have a smaller nut. Is there an "early" and "late" version of these steering links? Which ones are larger and which ones are smaller? Are they interchangeable? I didn't have the smaller nuts so I lubed the squeeker and bolted back up before I thought to check for fit. Help!

What year was the 140? I seem to remember that there were
some differences between early 140 front suspension stuff,
late 140 front suspension stuff, and 164 front suspension
stuff; the early 140 bushings and such are smaller. A quick
look at an online catalogue states things like the bushings
and ball joints changed in 1970 and the tie rod assembly
changed in 73.

Of course, just because things have different part numbers
doesn't mean they aren't the same. Do you have a close up
of the parts in question?

Yes, I see the differences and it looks like the later ones are "beefier". Part numbers are different and it seems clear they are different. Just hoping the nut size is different while the taper remains the same. Still hoping until someone knows for sure.

I was given a steering box a while back and it had a different size (smaller)tappered hole for the link. My car is a '71 and has the larger sized ends on all the tie rods, links, ect. I don't have any more details but I hope this helps your qwest.
