Help w/Transmission P position 700

Hi Guys:
I was wondering if someone could help me out with this sudden problem.
The automatic transmission gear selector on my 90 740 16 valve 152k all of a sudden refuses to go to PARK. I drove it for 40 miles or so tonight, stopped,
parked no problem.Came back home and the the gear selector doesnt go to Park.
The indicator actually doesn't pass from Neutral to Reverse and to Park, but Reverse engages although the back up lights don't come on.It goes and works fine
on Drive,2nd and 1st gears.Does anybody have a clue of what's wrong or what to do ? Or do I have to go to AAMCO and get ripped off?
Tks

There is a park-lock solenoid that can jam, preventing you from going into park. You will need to pull the shifter up to reach it. See the 700/900 FAQ.

If I'm not mistaken, that awful little device began in the 1991 model year. And it usually doesn't let people get OUT of park, but I've always seen that it lets the shifter IN.

I'd say it's totally shot shift linkage bushings, or a very bad transmission mount. Both are pretty easy, if filthy, things to fix. Filthy due to the usual conditions of things under a transmission.

If the shifter is tight otherwise, it's probably the mount, but if it's real sloppy, it's probably linkage bushings. Either way, go to a VOLVO shop, not an AAMCO shop. There's very likely nothing at all wrong internal to the transmission.
