More on Trailer Hitches. 900

My trailer hitch is still one day away. However, my tail light conversion arrived from IPD today. Not to cast doubt on the good people at IPD, but the conversion kit I recieved was just a standard "Drawtight" tail light power module. I didn't have any particular expectations like OEM Volvo, but I wasn't expecting such a commonly available unit. I'm sure it's a good quality unit and unlike some other sources, I can rest asurred that IPD sent me a unit that is compatable with my model and year of Volvo.

This does raise a question: are the Trailer Hitch setups sold by IPD also Drawtite units? If so, they are quite a bit more expensive than the units you can buy from other online sellers. I went for a Reese hitch myself, but you can order a Drawtite for a Volvo 940 for around $120.00. If you are doing so, you could probably save a bit of money (shipping if nothing else) if you went ahead and ordered the drawtite light module from the same seller. You'd also get the whole package on the same day.

    Hitch arrived today....Bad News 900

The Hitchfinder.com Reese hitch arrived today, a very solid well-bult hitch that included mounting hardware. Problem?

    (1) It was missing the promised drawbar.
    (2) Instructions were for a Chevy Lumina/Monte Carlo
    (3) It's the WRONG damn hitch!!! I test-fit it, there's no way this thing goes under a volvo! It's got brackets to be mounted to the backside of the bumper mounts (?!), the shape is entirely wrong and NONE of the other holes line up.

Now, I have to screw with a return, wait for them to ship the correct one, and of course, more of my precious end-of-semester-crunch time being wasted.

I'll let you know how the return goes. As of today, I DO NOT recommend using these guys.

As I think I alluded to in the previous thread, IPD sells Drawtite hitches and accessories. I bought my first from IPD and the second from Drawtite's online store. As I recall, IPD sells them for more than the Drawtite does. I think FCP Groton also sells them.

The Drawtite is substantial and well made. It fits as an OEM, is rated as a class 1 hitch and works...what exactly were you expecting??? I can't comment on the lighting module; I used Volvo's.

I just called the dealer adn he couldn't even tell me what size bolts to use. I have the OEM Volvo hitch without bolts or ball. I need to know what size bolts to use, and will order them from boltdepot. When you get yours could you tell me what size they are, and post them here. If anyone reads this that knows, please post as well. Thanks -

I downloaded the Draw-Tite instructions from an email from another brickster. The number to look for is N36440, for Volvo 100 & 200 SEries.

The two Hex M14 x 2 x 120mm Grade 8.8 bolts are difficult to find. One way is to get them from a wrecked 240 with a trailer hitch.

Another way is to get correct bolts, and get a threading die to cut threads the required length.

      Good Luck,

      Bob

ah... a continuing problem. I still don't have an answer either.
If my hitch arrives with bolts tomorrow, I'll post the size, type etc. If not...well, it's off to the local independent hardware store. My guess is that they are in the neighborhood of 10-14mm (heads). 10mm seems to be volvo's favorite size, but I'm hoping that 12-14 is more likley considering that a volvo is rated to pull 3500 lbs.

What we need is a good swedish corner hardware store... You know, I bet IPD knows precisely what sized bolts are needed, and would probbaly tell us if asked.

Incidently, I also got my new 200/700/900 catalog today and they clearly advertise "drawtite" hitches and taillight convertors. It's odd that they don't have the same or greater level of detail at the website vs the printed catalog...

19mm heads. I'm not sure what the proper designation is for said bolts. One of these days I'll by a thread pitch feeler gauge set.

Yes, the IPD web site sucks and is run by some very unprofessional types. For a long while they had a self-signed SSL certificate (a big no-no IMO). And yes, the hitches are Drawtite. FWIW, most stuff you'll find at IPD can be found elsewhere for cheaper. The difference is that by supporting IPD you support people who support the Volvo community (somewhat.. I'm getting more and more FWD crap in the catalogs they send me).
