Hey, thats my friend Rolf's car (the one doing the burnout). Well, at least it was when the picture was taken. I'm working on one of his other cars right now. Small world, huh?

It looks like we got through to the seller "Garry". He added on to his auction that indeed, the picture was not of his car but that it "looked" like it. By the looks of his reply to the question of why he didn't post a picture of his own car he is also a sarcastic SOB to boot.

Oh come on! His car looks just like it, except for a 2.5 inch rust HOLE in the driver's door. (And if the DOOR has a huge hole in it, the rest of the car just has to be a mess).

By the way - here's a picture of my daily driver!! Well, sort of close anyhow - mine at least has 4 tires and a steering wheel...

    Regardless, it's poor advertising 120-130

Despite the picture being of another car, it's a bad way to advertise.
Why would I want to buy a car who's tires are being burned up in the "seller's" picture?

I used to abuse my 122 like that when I was in high school. And no, I wouldn't want to buy that car from myself after I treated it like that. Busted morot mounts, busted u-joints, busted center support bearings. And eventually a busted rear end too.

That auction should be pulled. The picture has been on the internet for years and is in Sweden I recall reading. The actual car for auction is not pictured anywhere.

There was another such situation where someone's idea of accurate representation of their car was a closeup of the Al Pacino sticker in the window and nothing else. After complaints they eventually posted a photo of Jerry Sira's show-winning 122 with the disclaimer "Not actual car" attached.

Thanks for the head's up information regarding the picture in question. It would seem that the seller is being less than straight forward with this E-bay auction. I agree that the auction should be cancelled and/or amended with a disclaimer "Picture is not actual car for sale".

What say you fellow Brickboarders. Should we inundate the seller with questions concerning the origin of the picture and/or should E-bay be notified of this transgression?

Someone's already asked about whether it was the actual car. Check out the seller's response in the Ask Seller a Question section! Bizarre...

I sent him a fairly harshly worded comment about the ethics of posting up false pictures on an acution with very little other information.

I also asked him about whether its an actual pic of the car, got no reply.

Ebay is a terrible place for the car selling/buying business anyway. Buyers often don't buy the car, my friend listed his Range Rover 3 times before calling it quits, each time getting burned by the winning bidder.

And this guy is getting bids on a car for which he supplies essentially no information. But here is an even nuttier example:

Go on ebaymotors, click on cars and go the the 'other' listings. There is what the seller is calling a 'mystery car' for sale there, the seller is not revealing what it is or the condition its in, posting any pics or revealing anything about the car - and its getting bids! Whats up with that?

I notified the main bidder. I told her to ask him for more pictures of his car. I also told her about the ripoff of the picture from another web site. Lets hope that it turns out for the better. I don't like to see people get burned in a transaction like that.

                        notifying bidders 120-130

I would be cautious notifying bidders. It is against ebay policies to do so. While you are absolutely justified doing so, they can also suspend your account for it. Stupid, I know, but the same thing happened to Ian, aka iadr a while ago. He got wind that a seller was bidding up their own item to raise the selling price. Ian contacted the other legitimate bidder and warned them to stop. He was out of ebay for months.

SOme of ebay's policies are terrible but they are the biggest game in town and sometimes you just have to deal with it. Or we could start a Brickboard auction site; V-bay.

Go to the auction and click on where it says how many bids.
You then get a list of bidders, each of which is actually a link
to the member's profile. At that point there is a box you can click
on marked "contact member". It opens up the standard e-mail box ebay
                        uses for "blind" e-messages.

It would be an easy matter to rough out a standard message including the
URL of the picture with text like:
"Warning! The Volvo 122 you are bidding on is apparently NOT the one pictured
on the auction page. This same picture appears on the web at www.umpty-ump...
I am sending you this message as a member of a Volvo community that does NOT
want you to get burned in this apparently fraudulent auction."

and then put it on your clipboard and paste it into the box for each bidder.
Your ebay username will appear in the "From:" line of each message, along
with eBay's warning not to circumvent the auction since in doing so you
forfeit eBay's MARVELOUS protection against fraud.

Tire smoke from an SU carb b18? He must have dropped the clutch at like 6000 rpm!

Eh - I used to be able to do power-brake burn-outs with my old 122. Well, I guess that was after I put in a B20E - but it still had the B18 exhaust and carbs. First gear, put the brakes on just the right amount, revs, let the clutch out and the car would sit motionless and spin one of the rears. Lovely stupid human trick. I think having *cheap* tires helped considerably.

Heheheh. Let's see. Motor mounts, u-joints, center support bearings are all apparently weak on a 122 - those would routinely get tweaked. Eventually the rear end did hand grenade, but I suspect it was because the seal was bad and I let it get low. After that I put in a 142E driveshaft and rear axle and nothing in the drivetrain ever broke again.
