Car runs with key off and out 200

Last weekend my 86, 244, m46 ca.282,000 miles, the taillights and poarking lights would stay on after ignition key removal. Due to heavy rain and a leak above the fuse box, I cleaned and sealed. Seemed to fix the lighting problem. Just now turned off the car and removed the key- car continued to run, shifted to neutral and the car shut off.
Bad ignition switch? other ideas?
From what I remember reading swapping out the switch is not a walk in ther park.
Ricko

Many thanks for the replies. I'll check harness and electrical part of the switch.

Had the same thing. It is the brown wire to the coil shorting somewhere in the harness. I just fitted a new wire over the engine from the ballast resistor to the coil. Problem solved. YMMV.

Had an 84 that did the exact same thing.
check the small wires around the starter, mine had shorted there.
If the insulation is crumbling, better check out the whole engine harness as previously stated.

Hey, count your blessings! Many people can't even get these things to run!

Kidding aside, most people will probably say it's the wiring harness.

Don't despair, I've never done it, but I believe it is easier to replace the electrical part of the switch than the key part.

Yah, a whole LOT easier. There are two screws on the back side of the ignition switch holding the electrical part to the mechanical steering lock and key part.

Takes a small flat-blade screwdriver to get them out. You can see them with an inspection mirror if you have trouble. The connector just unplugs from it. Not that hard to replace. Now replacing the lock- that is no fun. Two big "security" bolts to drill out from underneath. Lousy job.
