Freeze plugs removal/refitting 140-160

Hi all,

I'm in the process of putting my B20E back together and since I'm at it, I thought it'd be a good idea to take the freeze plugs out and see what's behind (the block has been standing for a long long while). I got the new plugs and having seen their thickness, I'm wondering what I need to take the old ones out: is there a special tool I could go around easily, is it a matter of drilling a hole in the middle and lever it out? I've never done it so any tip will be highly valuable to me!! And what about the refitting: should I just hammer them in place and leave them? Do they have to distort in a certain way so they don't pop out again? Which side has to face the outside of the engine?

Well, in other words: heeelp ;-) !!

Thanks in advance, Seb

Take a small cold chisel and drive it through the center of the plug and
then you can probably pull it out by working the chisel.

Reinstallation: Make sure the seat is clean. Optimum driving tool is
something round, flat and about 80% of the diameter of the new plug.
Optimum expansion is just where the new plug goes flat.

Yup. Drill and pop. Careful to keep the filings out of the block. Bearing grease on the drill bit helps with that. To put in new ones, clean the seats throroughly, put in some gasket compound, and pound in with a hammer. It helps to use a 1 inch diameter piece of round bar or big, fat bolt. Hold that pressed against the plug and hammer on that till the center of the plug has a nice, large, flat area. It shouldn't be a dimple that goes inward beyond the rim the plug rests on.

Alternatively, you can usually hammer the center of the old plugs inwards until the edges curl up. Then they pop out pretty easily.
