update on 1988 240DL wagon 200 1988

Hello again,
Sorry about my first posting and the all caps thing. That was actually the first time I ever posted on a message board.

Here are a couple of things that I did to try to correct the problem I was having with a partially working instrument panel:

1. Charged the battery. It was only at 25% charge.
2. Replaced some fuses in the fusebox that looked bunk.
3. Removed the instrument panel and tightened everything that I could reach.

I still have the problem. It is very strange. I thought that when the spring would come the gauges would start working again, since it seemed that they liked to work when it was warm outside. When I was driving today that theory was disproved. Sometimes the alternator light comes on, sometimes it doesn't. My father installed a tachometer in the vehicle, and it usually reads 13.5 when going above 40 (I don't know the exact speed). Any more conclusions or information you can give me about this situation would be appreciated. Thank you all for your time.

Ihave a prlblem with this one:

y father installed a tachometer in the vehicle, and it usually reads 13.5 when going above 40 (I don't know the exact speed).

Tachometer measures engine speed in revolutions per minute, rpms. Your statement of 13.5 at 40 sounds more like the reading of a voltmeter. Is it?

The things you have done are helpful. Fuses have a habit of looking OK and being bad. Checking means spinning in place, or actually removing and reinstalling. Spinning also removes any oxide build-up on the ends, a common problem.

Another common problem is alternator brushes being worn out. The labor to pull them and check is the same as the labor to install a new set. Get a regulator/brush set from fpcgroton or a dealer or such, and replace yours. Length below 5mm is too short. A set usually is gone in 100,000 miles +/- .

    Good Luck,

    Bob
