Should I buy? 1990 740, Rex/Regina 700 1990

I've got a chance to buy a 90 740 sedan, rex/regina system, bare-bones basic except power windows. 250k km, original paint & absolutely rust-free, one small crack in dash, very clean interior. The catch? A broken rod. However the car can be mine with a good used motor with new seals, gaskets & t-belt installed, for $2500cdn. What should I watch for with the rex/regina system? I know O2 sensor is pricey but it's recently been replaced. The fellow offering it to me did warn me about the imminent expense of the sender unit/tank pump. No leaks yet but he advised it probably will within the next year or two. I've got nothing against the regina system, I've just always had k-jet, LH or Digifant (VW's version of LH) but never regina, so I'm not sure what to expect. How does it compare for performance & economy to LH 2.4?
Thanks!
-Chris

Should I buy? 1990 740, Rex/Regina 700 1990

Hi Chris,

Like Bruce, my experience with a 92 940 gives me no expertise on Rex or Regina, i.e. both ignition and fuel have never needed attention in the two years of its history under my care. I guess that's good...

I have absolutely no complaints about my 940 R/R. I got it at 127k miles, and it's now at about 146k in 20 trouble-free months.

Starts instantly at -35°f. With the AW-71L, I have gotten over 30 mpg on mostly level state/county roads with 35# in the tires. Overall mileage on my son's trip to Maine, Vermont, and back last week (425 miles on 4 studded snow tires) was 26.7 mpg. And I doubt he was babying it much.

Other than some parts prices, which I have yet to spend, I can't fault anything. Operation has been flawless.

The rod I'm referring to is a broken connecting rod - hence the replacement engine being installed as part of the purchase price. Installation being done by a very reputable indy shop, so no worries there.
