Shaft size and spline count on '84 240 steering shaft coupling? 200

I'm replacing my power steering with a manual rack, on an '84 240. Apparently the manual rack I bought from ebay is an 'early' pre-79 model, with a 14mm input, so it won't hook right up to the later-style lower U-joint, which looks more like a 19mm shaft. Nobody lists the early U-joint new, that I can find.

I'm wondering...can anyone out there tell me the exact steering shaft diameter and shaft count for the splined end of the steering shaft, where the lower U-joint slides onto it? And is it completely splined all the way around, or are there alignment 'gaps', as are found on the steering rack input shaft?

I'm asking this because I'm considering going with a part from Borgeson, http://www.borgeson.com/, who supply steering U-joints to the racing and streetrod crowds.

Thanks,

Mike

I did a quick count on a 19mm steering shaft and got about 48-50 splines.

I've seen a 3/4" clampable Borgeson joint advertised from Pegasus Racing, but it's 36 spline.

My 80 244 and 84 242 rack both have the 14mm input, and they are both stock to those years.

Size is about 14mm. Splines I can't say because they are not constant through the entire coupler. The picture I have shows this.

I disagree. I think the 14mm was discontinued after '78.
I can tell you that my old '79 (manual), my current '80 (manual) and my old '84 (power) all had 19mm pinion shafts.

You disagree about a part that came on my car from the factory?

I also doubt a 14mm pinion (manual?) rack on an '84 "from the factory".

Have you owned the car since new?

The Volvo Quick Reference Parts Catalog shows a distinct break between the 14mm rack (up thru '78) and the 19mm rack ('79 and later).

Other parts references I have also agree with this.

I think your '84 original factory rack was replaced at some time.
