Flickering Check Engine light

I just got a 90 240 sedan and after an initial tune up of dist cap and rotor and the correct spark plugs, it still seems to start rough, but run fine. I put another spedometer unit in it, (the old one was non functional) and the check engine light fleckers at idle, but comes on brightly at higher revs! No codes are set in the computer. This car looks like it had a rough past life, and I suspect that the reason I got it so cheap is becaus it won't pass emissions up-state. (My county doesn't have emissions inspections)

I'm going out on a limb here but is it possible you hooked the tach wire up to the wrong connection? Sounds almost like it's getting a pulse from the coil rather than the constant signal it should receive from the ECU if there's a fault code. The fact that there are no codes stored seems to back this up...

I'll join you on that limb (you shout no, no!)

The gray/red (white/red) wire should not be connected to anything except the tach's G terminal. (not for you Chris ;-)

Check out the various engine sections in the 700/900 FAQ, look in the pull down Features section at the top of the page. The 700/900 series have basically the same b230f motor, and the info contained should help you bring another of these fine cars back to a long, healthy ( and emissions friendly )life.
