My 960 Won't Start 900 1994

I have a 1994 960 Wagon that won't start. When I turn the key, the dashboard lights up but the car won't turn over. ANy ideas? Also, if its the starter, how much will this cost me to replace?

Thanks

Could be a bad starter, maybe a bad battery? Could also be that your PNP switch is not working. Try starting it with jumper cables.

Also put the key in the ignition, to allow the gear selector to move. Run the selector back and forth about 30 or 40 times and try to start, if that works you need a new PNP switch.

could be the B+ cable or the ignition switch. I've seen almost everything conceivable fail

Dan,

thanks so much. What is the PNP switch? When you say run the selector, do you mean moving the car in and out of park over and over again? Thanks

PNP = Park Neutral Position Sensor. It located on the passengers side of the transmission and is a common weak point.

Turn the iginition key to to RUN (do not crank the engine). Place your foot on the brake and row the gearshift selector from P all the way back to L, 20-30 times quickly. Then put back in Park, and turn your key to Start and see if it cranks over.

Another thing you can try is to turn the key to the START position with your LEFT hand and move the gearshift lever very slowly forward or backward until the starter motor engages.

But theses two 'tricks' only work if it's a bad PNP sensor.

As DanR said, it could be a weak battery, faulty ignition switch, bad solenoid/starter, etc...

Give it a try and let us know.
