740 & 940 sluggish 700 1987

Both of my bricks, 1987 740, and 1992 940,
are very sluggish performance wise.
The only thing I can pass are the steam rollers....
Tune ups are recent, and the cars are well
maintained. Wires, plugs, filters, timing, etc
are OK. CATs are not plugged. Firing on all 4s.
Anything else ?

Make sure your '87 is timed correctly, even a tiny bit advanced if you promise not to use cheap gas.

The 92 does not have adjustable timing. But both have an intake air hose that can get splits in it, or collapse. Make certain both have good hoses from the AMM to the throttle.

Other than that, well do the math. 115hp moving 3200 lbs = sedate performance. It's why Volvo built Turbos.

740 & 940 sluggish 700 1987

I had something like that happen and a bottle of RED LINE injector cleaner did it for me. They say is good for 100 gallons but for a quick clean up you can use the whole bottle in one full tankwhich is what I did. Let me know if you try it and it works in this case.

Thanks Bill Nelson Hartford, WI

See FAQ on throttle body cleaning. If it has not been done, you be surprised at the difference it can make (unless another problem). It's a little or no cost preventative and diagnostic measure. Also check FAQ on air intake gasket leaks (another inexpensive part).

I have never cleaned my injectors on my 740 (240,000 miles) or 940 (220,000 miles and always run high test in my 940 turbo) and both run great. I have replaced injector O'rings and cap however. This is not to say they may not need cleaning, but cleaning the TB will also help.

Gary
