Cold Start Stumble 1993 Volvo 240 L4-2.3L SOHC VIN 88 B230F 200 1993

1993 Volvo 240 L4-2.3L SOHC VIN 88 B230F (Federal nonCalifornia)

Symptom: Stumble for up to 40-50 seconds at idle or light acceleration after cold start. I can interrupt the problem by throttling a little harder and within 5-10 seconds the symptoms disappear.

Forum research has revealed that the most likely cause is the need to install an EPROM kit into the ECU (currently have BOSCH 0 280 000 951 / Volvo 6 842 115). All Data DIY states that the kit is # 271836-9.

Need a recommendation on where to get this kit? I'm willing to go to a dealer but it's been hit or miss on "customer service oriented parts folks. And of course I'm looking for less expensive but not "cheap".

Other thoughts are most appreciated.

Previous mechanical efforts leading up to this:
big tuneup (was needed anyway), cleaned all electrical contacts and grounds, confirmed eng temp sender resistances, MAF part number is correct and tests okay as does the throttle position sensor, O2 sensor checks okay (although at cold start it is ignored), IAC and throttle body cleaned and are functional, connections at the computers are clean, ran full OBD with no codes, no codes during stumble.

    Thanks to those who replied. The stumble at first start is gone. Replacing the fuel pressure regulator resolved a secondary issue and actually made the first start (30-50 seconds) stumble worse. So I installed the new EPROM that AllDataDIY recommended. Worked like a champ. The ECU was the factory "951", but Volvo released a new EPROM for low volatility fuel. The kit was about $85 from FCP Groton.

    Anyway, as I worked my way towards the EPROM change, lots of other issues were taken care of by cleaning all of the ground connections, cleaning electrical contacts, cleaning the throttle body, cleaning the IAC valve, BIT checking the various components and a big tune up. But this one was persistent.

      can you give more details on the EPROM kit you ordered to resolve this problem. I have the same exact issue with my 93 245 and I am having trouble finding it on the FCP Groton site.

    Hi JR,

    Have you checked the intake throat in the area where the accelator switch is located? A good cleaning with special note given to 2 very small ports---they should not be plugged with crud which accumulates there from the gases aspirated from the crank case.

    Also you may need to adjust the accelarator switch. Look for the procedure in the Bentley Service manual or down load it from the IPD.com web site. Basically make sure the switch clicks on as it just moves from the full closed position to slightly open and and clicks again as it nears full the closed position----reading the procedure will be better than what I have written here.

    One last thing--- Redline Injector cleaner has smoothed out both of my 240s and my 940 turbo. I put the whole bottle in a full tank.

    I had exactly the same syptoms on my '88 245 with a bad Fuel Pressure Regulator two weeks ago. Ordered one from FCP Groton $50/2 day shipping/10 minute install - problem gone.

    'Hope it turns out to be that simple for you; certainly easier & less drastic than computer mods - be certain to watch out for the surge of pressurized gasoline from the fuel rod when you pull the old FPR - not a time to be smoking!

        Oh...you're not going to like the answer.

        I was away at a sports car race with a freind of mine who runs an independent Volvo shop full time (He also races an 1800). He heard me starting and stalling the car outside his Motorhome one morning when I was headed off to get donuts at 6am...stuck his head out cursing that I had woken him up and told me to order a damned Fuel Pressure Regulator!

        ...then he calmed down, told me to open the hood...pulled the rubber hose off the front (grille side) of the FPR..held it to my nose...and I smelled fuel. He explained that you really don't want to smell fuel there, that the internal rubber diaphrams begin to leak with age, but that the problem comes and goes - not super-urgent. Sure enough...no more cold start problems for four days, when it happened again in my driveway...I had the new FPR from Groton by then, threw it on...wasn't even late for work...zero problems since. It's apparently a common issue, and no great loss if you replace in error since it seems it would be old (and prone to failure) on your car also.

        Hope this helps...I'd love to take credit for the diagnosis...but alas...friend did it.
