Cooling system question 200 1985

I fitted my '85 244Ti with a Nissens 3-row a while back, and changed the thermostat at the same time (darned if I can remember the rating, tho). If you think of the temp gauge as half of a clock with 7:00 representing 'HOT' and 11:00 representing 'COLD', then my temp gauge used to sit at 9:00 with the engine fulled warmed up. However, since installing the new radiator and thermo it rarely ever creeps past 8:00 and if I turn the heater on, the needle is nearly resting at 'COLD' (7:00).

Normal with the Nissens, or wrong thermo?

Bad gauge? Gauge does hit 9:00 with the A/C on and a load on the engine (e.g. uphill at 70 mph in OD). Used to hit 10:00 in these conditions.

Could I possibly damage the engine by running it on the 'cool' side?

Thanks,
Charles

    Cooling system question 200 1985

Thanks for the replies. Got it backwards in my post - 11:00 is 'hot' and 7:00 is 'cold'! Was up most of the night and posted that right before I hit the sack this morning....

Will try replacing the thermo soon and see what happens.

    Cooling system question 200 1985

I am about to put a Nissen 3-row in my 242 Ti after the thermostat didn't fix the problem and FCP Groton was practically giving them away on eBay. You might consider trying what the truckers do... put a piece of cardboard inbetween the intercooler and the radiator. Probably won't do the intercooler much good, but my engine always runs better at 9:00 than 7 or 8.

Sounds like a bad 'stat - opening at too low a temp, or partially stuck open. They're only about $9 (fcpgroton.com), so try replacing it and see. I think the 87C one is correct for your turbo. If the gauge "used to sit at 9:00", it sounds like it's working OK, nothing you have done with rad and stat replacement that would have affected the gauge or sending unit.

Not sure if your K-jet system runs rich with coolant temp below normal, (the LH-Jet will), but others with better knowledge can advise.
