Camshaft seal removal on outside or inside of seal

I have read the posts about using a screw driver or curved puller to hook the old seal, but do they go on the outside edge of the seal or the inside edge?

I use either a dental tool or a tiny (1/8") screwdriver to get the seals out. Sometimes they are really baked in there though.

Apply the tool at the ID (shaft area) of the seal. The OD is stuck tightly into the bore of the head or block.

I apply lithium or silicone grease to the outside of new seals when installing them. Observe how far in your old ones are and drive the new ones in to the same depth.

    Good luck!

I've seen advice (I think for the rear main seal), to always put the new seal in at a slightly different depth, in order to avoid small ridges warn by the original seal. Does this apply only to the rear main seal, or to seals in general?

You want to hook the puller in the middle of the seal, and stay away at all cost from the cam. I always just go ahead and remove the end bearing cap. That way you just remove and replace the seal with your fingers.
