Access ATF fill on 960 900 1997

Hi all - Couple questions...

1) Can I use plain old vinyl tubing to construct a "funnel" to reach the AFT fill tube on the 960? I can't find a real funnel with a long enough spigot. I wasn't sure if any of the components of the fluid would eat the vinyl.

2) Finally got to the flame trap. No chance for cleaning. The whole unit was fused together (nipple, trap, bushing) so I just replaced it altogether (about $9 in parts that I got from a local indy). I broke the old one apart and it was a real mess. During the replacement process, I found that there was no suction coming from the small (5mm) vacuum hose that attached to the flame trap nipple. It was totally clogged, so I replaced that too, but it made me wonder: What is the function of that draw, and what are the repercussions of it not working in quite a while?

Thanks

I purchased my funnel with tube from WalMart for about $ 4.

Vinyl is fine, that how I do it.

The small vacume line sets up a venturi effect to draw crankcase fumes and vent them into the air intake. Clogged up flame trap merely means the crankcase fumes are not being burned and possible positive pressure in the crankcase which sometimes may encourage oil to migrate out the seals. No permanent damage will result.

ATF tube : I went down to the local hardware store and bought a long, straight, rigid, white plastic plumbing tube/pipe that has the same O.D. as the I.D. of the tranny tube. I cut one end at a 45 degree angle (that's the end I put in the dipstick tube), the other end I attached to a funnel. I can then stick the rigid tube down into the tube and pour my atf into the funnel. Works great, no mess.

Flame-Trap : The system is designed so that fresh air can be circulated thru the crankcase and into the intake system when it can be burned. The crankcase air contains combustion blowby as well as condensation. If this system is plugged, it can ruin your oil (chemically) and cause seals to leak oil as blowby pressure is not relieved in the crankcase. Has your oil dipstick been pushed out of the tube.

Thanks. Though I do have leaks, the dipstick has not been pushed out. The trap actually still let air pass through, it was not totally clogged, but certainly degraded.
