An answeer to my question about starter in 142 140-160

I asked for help with a starter in a 142 a while ago and decided to keep messing around with it. The answer isn't very mentally challenging (or I couldn't do it). It's also not too hard.

Just release the transmission support brace after supporting it witha jack. Lower the jack a few inches and the bolt goes in easily. Simple, and it doesn't take a long time to do the trick with the tranny. The bolt is another story. We were lucky that trhere were two of us. In the past I've been able to wedge an open end wrench on the nut (in the engine compartment) and turn the bolt witha socket wrench from undereneath. Oh, yeah, the bolt has to go in from underneath as George said some time ago. That's the same for 120/130, 140, 240.

BTW, my son was the one who suggested lowering the tranny, but dad was just too damn smart to do it that way (the right way) in the beginning.

Thanks for the insight you guys gave before.

Jim Hampton

An answeer to my question about starter in 142 140-160

Well dog gonnit.. I'm still gonna disagree. It can't be done. You must have them special 'rubberman' made bolts. Mine didn't have a prayer of going in even with the transmission hanging.

    Potential differences though...

    Mine was a M410.
I've got stiffer 164 motor mounts.
    I was angry.
    I was in a hurry.
    It was really cold out.
I was really pissed off by that time.
    I couldn't feel my hands.
    It was really cold.
    I was getting mad.
Snow kept falling in my eyes.
    etc...

Good job on taking the time to finish it up right.

    Cheers!

Wonder if your tunnel is shriveled up somehow......

I don't know about my tunnel, but some other parts were shriveled. It got kinda cold out in the driveway. We had about 7-8" of snow in the yard last week.

Hmmm... could be. But I forgot to mention one thing that I encountered that day...

It was really $*&^#@ cold that day. But I tried to get that bolt in, and it didn't go... maybe I was just angry, but don't think so...

Could there be a difference twixt early and late 140 tunnels? Mine's a early '70... perhaps Volvo made a minor change that I've not had the pleasure of noticing in the later 140s...?

Or... was there a difference in the tunnels between auto and manual cars? Mine is originally an auto.. I know its different in a 122, but I thought 140s were all the same.

We just finished converting this to manual from automatic. Maybe it would have been easier with a snake bolt, but couldn't find one.

An answeer to my question about starter in 142 140-160 1971

This is a question I have wanted a rock solid answer on for sometime now. Mine is a 71 original 4spd car and I am going to convert it to a T5 ford 5 speed this summer with John's help/advice and parts. I have heard that the early 140's have a more narrow tunnel. However others have questioned this. So my question is: Do early 140's have a more narrow tunnel? I need to know because of this up comming swap I will doing.
