NO FUEL 140-160

I recently got a 73 144 w/ D-Jet. I have fire but no fuel. The fuel pump runs for a couple seconds when the ignition is turned on. I can spray starting fluid in the intake and it will run for a few seconds. So I heard from a friend of mine that the distibutor has two sets of points in it, one for the ignition, and on for the injector pulse. Is this true, and can i get to it without taking the distibutor out. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks Eric

thanks for all the advice guys. I cleaned all the fuel lines and tank and injectors before i even tried to start it. I also replaced all fuel lines because car sat for a while. I have pulled the distibutor and cleaned the contacts for the fuel injection also. But still have no fuel out of the injectors. I know I have fuel in the fuel rail. I only have 7 volts giong to the distibutor for the injection. Should it not be 12v? Am I missing a relay?
I dont have any books or wiring diagrams and this is my first D-Jet. Are there any grounds that i am missing?

    Thanks Eric

There could be. I notice that Rolling Mag is advertising the FI pocket manual
for these cars, which might be a good investment for you.
7 volts may be OK for the trigger points. The injectors use a reduced voltage.

You can test the trigger contacts in the distributor by turning the car on (don't start it) and remove the tray witht he contacts from the distributor. You don't have to remove the distributor. As long as it (the trigger contact tray) is plugged in, if you work the 2 little points with your fingers the fuel pump should run. If that checks out OK replace the contacts and turn your attention to the injectors. If not you need to trace those wires to be sure they aren't broken.

Fuel pump is supposed to run for a couple of seconds. This indicates the computer is probably okay. It sends the 2 second pulse to the relay.

Pull the fuel rain and see/feel if injectors click/spray when ignition on, throttle turned. Bypass relay to make pump run. Relay on right fender lip.

Probably not trigger points. Rarely fail.

Fuel pump is very high pressure, required for D-Jet injection. If car sat, pump may be gummed up.

Change out filter immediately to eliminate as cause. Otherwise, previously suggested tests are excellent first steps... You may just go to tailpipe and smell for fuel too before pulling fuel rail or injectors (danger of fuel spray causing fire or injecting into skin) as a first check for fuel. How old is the stuff in the tank? maybe its nasty kaka.

Are the injectors spraying or even getting fuel? Pop out one of the injectors and have someone crank the engine a few times while you watch the injector. This can narrow down the possibilities quite a bit.

And now for something completely different.

The tank was pulled and cleaned, new filter, new fuel lines for injectors, new hoses to the injector rail and back again. We have checked the wiring and the pulse triggers on the dist. We've got 7.5volts in and 7.5 going out on a pulse but no pulse on the injectors the relays check good we don't know about the computer what is the adjustment knob on the side of the computer. We know about the K jet's and the LH systems but not the D jet. This car has sat in a shed since 86, Theres no rust on this car the interior is almost perfect. The 144 has 86,000 miles on it.The production #is 1446363. We have fuel pressure to the rail but no pulse,I told my son that ownes the car it will be so simple when we find out the problem that we'll say why didn't we do that the first time. What about the ground for the computer where is it located.
      Thanks
      Rodney

The knob on the ECU is the idle mixture adjustment, and has no affect on anything else.

AFAIK, all the grounds are on the stud at the rear of the intake manifold. Not sure if the ECU grounds there too, or just through the case.

When you operate the trigger contacts manually, do you hear the injectors click?
