Deal on a 1990 740? 700

Hey all,
I have an opportunity for a dark blue 90 740 with 135,000 miles on it. Its been well maintained and they want 1200 for it. Only problems are, there is some heat coming thru when its turned off (valve won't shut all the way? is this a big deal? owner said they just cranked up the AC a little bit more). And he replaced the headliner with something too thick for a backing so the sunroof won't open. Also no biggie for him. But it has new rotors, brakes, etc and looks and runs fine.
What do you all think?

Sounds like a deal. The heater contol valve will take you all of 10 minutes to replace and it's a $10-$15 part at FCP Groton. It should be replaced as a preventive measure anyway because they have a reputation for catostrophic failure at 10+ years.

Catastrophic failure? What would be some of the catastrophies one might experience when it fails?

All of your coolant spills on the ground causing your engine to over heat.

Yeah, that's exactly right. And these cars don't have a low coolant light, so you risk blowing the headgasket when this happens, if you don't shut it down IMMEDIATELY. The engine's life span without coolant is measured in minutes.

Seriously, with any head gasket job, or radiator job, or other cooling system service on a 740/760/940, the old heater control valves should be replaced. They can be damaged by an overheating event, and are highly likely to cause a second event, much to the owner's dismay.
