Wierd rear hop and rattle 700 1989

For the past few days, I've been having some odd issues with my 740t (non-irs, plain jane diff) When accelerating from low speeds, anytime under heavy load or even mildy brisk acceleration, the entire car shakes violently, with the vibration emanating from the rear of the car. The shake feels almost like wheelhop, but is violent enough that the car will not move until I ease off the accelerator and take off at a slower pace. The vibration returns at each gear shift, or whenever I attempt to accelerate briskly. It also seems to clunk when making sharp turns Anyone know what this is? I had the car on jackstands a few days ago and improperly diagnosed it as a torn lower torque arm bushing, which was replaced, but the problem still persists. Anyone ever dealt with this? What could it be? I checked through the haynes manual and the 700/900 FAQ to replace the bushing, which was said to give some of these tendencies, but this did not help. What else could it be?

Have you looked a the driveshaft carrier bearing? When the rubber wears out the driveshaft can flop all over the place.

Thinking about it. It could just be bad 'U' joints on the Drive shaft. much less hassle to replace.

Automatic trani? Put your foot on the brake. Put the car in Drive then shift it to Reverse...does it really Bang from Drive to Reverse? if yes, it's probably the 'U' joints.

generally, volvos don't have enough power to do this but it almost sounds like you broke a tooth on your Spider gears.

these are the small gears insde the Carrier. Usually if you are beating ther heck out of your car and spinning your tires you can break these. But generally you need more gusto then a Volvo engine has. Have you been spinning one rear tire a lot on Ice and then having it grab on dry pavement? That could do it.

Does it Hop or pop more when you are turning ? If you are driving straight does it happen less?

no, but the engine is a bit modded. I recently installed a ported 531 head, larger turbo and some other goodies. Before then, it had a leaky intercooler and a few other vac leaks, after I repaired them its been lots peppier and I started noticing tranny and rear end problems soon after that.

I had several chipped spider gear teeth and a crack in the carrier on my severely abused 242ti. Not quite broken but grinding & clunking when turning.
