temp gauge tube bent 120-130

Next question...when I got the speedo back from shop, brand new temp gauge was installed, and capillary (?) tube was bent as seen in photo. After cursing, I carefully bent it back to proper position, and inserted sensor in boiling water to see if thing still worked.

Needle is rising, but the question is: could the long term reliability/ durability of the gauge now possibly be compromised?

newby question 120-130

My tube is broken... has been for a while. Can a guage assembly/tube/sensor be ordered new from Sveden, for less that $500 hopefully?!

newby question 120-130

I have a, as usually, vague recollection that someone posted instructions for how to adapt an electrical, 140 series, temp gauge to a 122 instrument cluster. It might have been Paul Malloy. I did a search, but nothing shows up. Anyone have a lead? If it was you, Paul, could you please speak up?

newby question 120-130

You could probably get new one for less than $125, but with weak dollar these days, it might be a bit more. Part # is 673999, I think the B18 version is painted green/ white, and B20 version is green/ white/ red.

Try Scandcar in Netherlands or Veteranprodukter in Sweden (if you live in US, they might want you to purchase through their US branch VP-Automotive, which is more spendy).

You probably could also get it repaired at instrument repair shop for close to same price.

newby question 120-130

There is a shop in San Jose Ca. that does these repairs. A bit spendy, but they can work with just the guage head only.

Cost will work out close to the cost of a new guage if the tube and sender are missing.

Thanks. Do you happen to have any name and contact info for that shop in caly?

Eureka, I have found it... sorta!

Can't find the San Jose guys but these guys look good:

Now this is a neat web page. I have nothing to lose on my wagon's guage... it has no bulb at all, or tube for that matter? If he can do it, I can too!!!

Great stuff, thanks! Wouldn't it be tricky, though, to find a donor with a sender that fits the Volvo head, or might the one that fits the Plymouth do for a B16, B18, or B20 as well? If the tube is filled with ether, it seems improbable that one could cut it near the bulb to make the connection there, and then make another connection near the gauge. Besides, it's the ether-filled bulb you'd want to replace, right? Or am I missing something?

I think most temp bulbs are pretty generic in terms of size and threading. Probably will take a little shopping around.

Agreed.. Making the connection near the guage assembly seems the most practical to me.

self repair 120-130

seems tempting to try it yourself. In which case, you might consider the following :
Ether properties :
highly flammable !
melting/freezing point : -177°F / -116°C
flash point : -40°F / -40°C
boiling point : 94°F / 34°C
vapor can travel more distance than you would expext, so all open flames and hot surfaces to be avoided.
In view of the low flash point, you would prefer to chill with CO2-ice at -87°F/-66°C, instead of an ice & salt mixture (only approx 0°F / -17°C).
Good luck,
john

Wow....You agreed for a lousy 2 million?? They offered me 5!

All seriousness aside, you probably have got about 50 bends in the tube
before it breaks (assuming to don't bend it enough to flatten it).
So you are down to 48 or 49. Handle it carefully.

No prob -- the tube holds ether (or whatever is in there) or not. If it works now, it's likely to stay working.
