Finally found a 122S for my own 120-130

Down payment has been sent for my 1st 122S Wagon. I've been wanting one of these since I saw my 1st one while an undergraduate in college. While I love my 940, I've been wanting a "simpler" car with some style (I could never go back to a 140).

So I'm wondering what special considerations I'll have to deal with in a 1967 122S? I'm getting a ton of spare parts with it, including some new fenders. It's got some cabin rust (floorboard) cracked windshield, and the engine needs a rebuild. I'm also getting a spare B18 engine, header, carbs, manifold, etc.
This car runs, it's roadworthy, and has an upgraded IPD sway bar. I'm gonna pick it up in a month (when the current semester ends).

So, any thoughts or first-timer's experiences with a 122 that could help me?
Are there any resources akin to the 700/900 FAQ for the Amazon?

(I've done extensive maintenance on a 1972 B20-powered 145 and this car looks similar inside the engine compartment dual carbs, etc).

    RJ;

    Anticipatory congratulations!

In the mean time, you might want to (pre-)edumacate yourself on the model (I suggest at Sw-Em.com)...possibly also seek help about the VAS (Volvo Acquisition Sydrome)...we meet every Thursday!

    Cheers

      Yeah ... what he said!

Know what they do at the meetings???? They read Amazon want adds until they swoon!

Seriously, Ron has a great site to start with. Then go to VClassics and check out the tech archive for some stuff you are not sure about or modifications you may be interested in.

Next to the IPD classifieds to check for some good deals on used parts or cars. Then the Brickboard classifieds.

After a little bit, I go to VP Autoparts to checkout the new interior stuff an their catalogs... more good pictures. Really important to go to GCP and download parts catalogs lots of part numbers and really cool pictures.... over 700 pages of B18 Amazon stuff and the same for B20 models. You shokuld be able to field strip and reassemble your Amazon blindfolded!!!

After a quick break, go to VPerformance and drool over some really neat performance stuff John has and then bop on over to the IPD online catalog and browse a while for some stuff you surely need.

A little later i call Shayne up at IPD and order those parts I really need and check the weather in Portland. You can order on line, but Professor Green has lots of wisdom to impart and he gets lonesome while he is handcuffed to his computer all day!!!. I try to call every week or so to make sure he hasn't forgotten who I am.

Well, at this point it is time for lunch so I have a little salad and the afternoon is a little free form. i've made a couple of little dice-like things that have my favorite web sits to choose from.

Yeah well, that's my day, mostly. I haven't got VAS so much as I Roll fever!! It's not so bad I guess!

These guys are some of the professors here at Amazon U:

Walrus is a metallurgist and knows how to fix really broken things of all sorts. He has a great "Culch" to work with and big birds in his driveway... I think they are penguins or something like that.

S Berry is the resident practitioner of Megasquirt.

JohnMc is from St Louis and if you are good, he might let you look at is cool PV. He has Webers, but has a hankerin for fuel injection.

Phil S has a wicked P1800 and his wife Marsha has one of the finest 120 sedans going. Phil gave Marsha's motor away, but he has paid his penance and he doesn't have to sleep in the garage anymore!! It's a nice garage too... a Five Holer I recall!

Nah... it 's just an obsession to me!

      Later..have fun!

Get a professional model hub/drum puller for hte rear brakes (J.C. Whitney had a decent one for a fair price).

        Rust and engine needs rebuild...

Not only will you be able to dis-assemble and reassemble blindfolded, you'll get plenty of practice!

Anticipate fully tearing down and reassembling everything in the brakes, suspension and steering just to make it truely road-safe.

Engine sounds to be speaking for itself!

        Get radiator rodded out.

At least open tranny top cover for a look inside and scrutinize the oil that comes out. Not many rebuild options but some parts are still available such as dog keepers, bearings and syncro-cones. No lay-shaft stuff (alas).

Ditto for the rear-end but bits are more readily available.

Expect to have to remove the heater to dig the crud out of the plenum and replace the drain hose!

        Enjoy!

          Ordering Reading Material.... 120-130

As suggested, I've been requesting parts catalogs and ordering the repair manuals. In a few weeks I'll have:

          -Haynes Manual 120 Series
          -Cylmer Manual 120 Series
          -Intereurope Manual 120 & P1800 Series

btw: I'll also have an extra Cylmer 140 Manual (from my original Volvo, the 145S - it has a bad/faded cover, but it's free to anyone who needs it (unless you are in nigeria) Only catch is that you'll have to wait until I get the new(er) copy.

As far as repairs... that promises to be an adventure. At least with the tranny and radiator I'll have spares (two extra trannies actually)...

I've been looking through the the Volvo sites. I also read the saga of the 122S and the "given-away" engine. Nice lookign car. Hopfully mine won't have rust quite so bad - eek!

    Finally found a 122S for my own 120-130 1967

    Hello Repairman Jack:

I bought a '67 Volvo 122S wagon back in August and it is just a dream. I am not sure what part of the country you live in but in the New York City area it practically stops traffic, surprisingly enough. I bought mine because I figured it would meet my needs. It truly has.

You might want to get your hands on the shop manual. Someone here sent it to me on CD-ROM and I would be happy to send you one if you send me your home address. My e-mail is jeff@jeffpucillo.com.

Good luck with the car, it is such a pleasure to drive.

    Cheers,

    Jeff Pucillo

I'm in St. Louis. In the last 10 years I've seen only maybe 3 Amazons. I have to drive to Texas to get this one, but I'm looking forward to it.

I have a 68 122s wagon and would rather drive it than my 98v90 or my 89/760 wagon.I was lucky enough to buy it with most of the work done but the last owner didn't take very good care of her. I've got a lot of rust showing up. She's a real headturner here in Stuart Fl,I haven't seen any other amazons at all. Good luck on your journey, it will be worth it. There is nothing like a wagon!

          Finally found a 122S for my own 120-130 1967

As it turns out, I'm buying this car from it's only owner and he's a volvo enthusiast. He has also put many hundreds of thousands of miles on it. He's owned three 122s, and still drives a P1800. Even stranger is that while the car is in Texas, it lived in Missouri for a few years when it was new. In some ways, buying it is a home-coming. The current, soon to be previous, owner also made some important upgrades already (breaklight switch, front and rear swaybars, new valve cover, cam seals, and some other improvements). It's a tad rusty on the fenders and nose but he already purchased both replacement fenders and a nosepiece. All I have to do is rebuild the engine... Or rebuild the spare one he's throwing into the deal. I also have to rebuild the rusted out floorboards... Then get it re-painted.

What's dangerous here is that I'm getting overly excited about finally getting a 122. I'm tempted to skip classes before the semester ends (end of april). Not a good idea in grad school (particularly since I'm a teaching assistant), so I'll restrain myself. But I'm *really* looking forward to getting this thing home.

The only other 122 I know of in St. Louis belongs to an independent volvo specialist - A bright yellow 122 sedan, fully restored. I don't know the year, but I'll be bringing it by there for a checkup as soon as it gets home.

          Dang, 4 more weeks....

here are some pics of it in texas...waiting for me...
