960 96 140000 have a thump coming from the right rear, but not on all bumps. have emptied the trunk, still hAappens. have had it up on alift ad have checked all bushings, shock looks ok moved things around with a pry bar. all seem ok. put new tires on yesterday. now this noise doesn't happen all the time, but over man holesone can hear it. last night one time it was even a series of tump, clunk, thump. any ideas?

Check the bushings and suspension components for loose bolts/connections.

I had a similar problem on a 1992 945T and it was the exhaust system , there should be two mounts on the rear muffler, one of mine had fallen off.
The only way I able to find this was to have the car lifted on a drive on hoist, this will simulate road conditions as opposed to lifting the body ,as on most hoists, which sets up an unrealistic, suspension condition. Many muffler shops now have these type of hoists.

I've had the same problem with my '94 960 wagon, a thumping from the right rear of the car when going over certain bumps. While accelerating away from the curb in a completely quiet neighborhood at about 3:00 a.m., I really noticed it, as a rapid series of thumps, not related to going over any bumps. I described it to my mechanic, and he said he'll look at it the next time the car's on the rack for an oil change, and he mentioned a possible loose muffler, so your opinion helps keep me from worrying it's something serious, since I have to put up with it another thousand miles.
