1988 240 needs new ECU - Got a spare?

After many, many troubles passing smog, my mechanic and I determined that I need a new ECU (see post "6 degree phantom shifting" for details).

Does anyone have an old brick sitting around with a working ECU I can procure?

Well, that is about the only 554 I have ever heard of failing. Makes me skeptical. But I have a spare if you want to try it.

Actually it is a confirmed case of ECU failure... a volvo mechanic swapped them briefly and all problems dissapeared, however wanted $500 for the unit. At the very least, I will pay for shipping... do you have any other charge and how will $ be handled?

I'm with rhaire, I think somethin' else is going on there. But I guess maybe one of those could fail. That garage oughta be ashamed, $500. What a bunch of jerks. I paid $500 for my CAR. And it's one of the best cars I've ever owned, at that.

I think you're right, Rob. I can't find the "6 degree" thread that Flup refers to, but recall it as being where the TPS and IAC plugs were inadvertently swapped.

I believe I suggested that the +12V from the IAC plug (center terminal) may have jolted the ECU when it showed up on what should have been a ground via the TPS idle contact.

Can't find the thread he refers to though.

1988 240 needs new ECU - Got a spare?

Going back, I wasn't able to find the post either... even though I wrote it. the TPS and the IAC were at some point before I owned the car swapped... caused a one time fault (although I believe it caused more damage to the circuitry than originally assumed) According to the timing light I now purchased, the spark is not advancing as it should during acceleration and the engine is now running altermittantly very, very rich then slightly lean in a 50 or 60 second cycle between.

I will do my best to find the post today.
