Temp Guage Reading 200 1991

Temp guage reading is about 1st 3rd of guage or less.
1. What is the normal reading -- should it be about half way when warm?
2. What is the actual corresponding coolant temperature at this reading?
3. Also, in a moderate climate approx how long should it take for the vehicle to reach normal operating temperature?

Thanks

1 - fully warmed up should be halfway (9:00)
    2 - This corresponds to about 195F (90C)
3 - about 5 minutes depending on how hard you are working the engine.

Volvo incorporated a "smoothing" circuit into the gauge from about 1986-on to keep it from fluctuating as engine temps changed slightly. This was to keep nervous owners from worrying. This circuit is failure prone and then gives odd readings. IPD offer a "kit" to bypass this and return the gauge to pre-86 operating system...you can do the same with a piece of wire and a soldering iron in a few minutes.

Now, given all that, the most likely possibility for your low reading is a failed thermostat. These are about $10 from FCPGroton.com, and I'd recommend the 92C unit.

poster mentions moderate climate. Did cooler thermostats get used for that? I'm getting my tstat checked out tomorrow as I suspect it is a cool one.

From what I've read here, the cooler t-stats are meant for warmer climates like the southern U.S. For us folks in the northern U.S. and Canada the warmer t-stat is recommended...
