Please Help!?! 200 1978

So using everyones advice, thank you all by the way, I went to drain the fuel tank. I drained it using the fuel pumps by connecting a hose to the output of the external pump, it worked for a minute and then went dry. Knowing that there was more fuel than that in the tank I decided to pop the plate open in the trunk and take a look inside. It seems that the intank pump sits in some type of compartment seperate from the other fuel in the tank and the other fuel cannot get to the pump, what is this? Also, it seems that I need a new fuel tank...The inside is terribly rusty, I mean when I pulled the sending unit out, it is covered in rust and and big chunks of rust particles. Went and got a flashlight to look in the tank, it is rusty and has rust particles all over the bottom, it still holds fuel fine and is not rusty on the outside. Car sat for 4-5 years and I guess that this is the result. So, Do I need a new fuel tank, or can I clean it some how? I am stuck!!

If a vehicle is going to be sitting for an extended period, it should have a full tank of gas to help prevent rust.
The "compartment" is baffling(sheet metal baffles that is...not confusing) to keep the fuel from sloshing away from the pump.
There are a variety of multi-step tank cleaners on the market. They are acid washes which etch the inside of the tank which is then coated with something. May or may not work in your case.

How do you pick a good one? 200 1978

I've got a car that actually flows rusty looking fuel (like it's a funny orangey brown colour) so I probably want to replace the tank before I contemplate replacing any other parts of the fuel system. It'd be a stupid to put all that crap through a new and expensive Bosch main pump when I can finally afford one. So what's the quickest way to ascertain whether the boneyard tank I'm looking at is as far gone as mine?

I could also use some safety tips here. How do I do this without blowing myself up?

Punch a hole in the bottom and see what comes out. Use a brass or aluminum punch to avoid blowing yourself up.

Take off the plate in the trunk, remove the sending unit and take a look inside.
