choppy wipers 900 1992

Hey all.

My 92 944 turbo has a bad case of choppy wipers. In other words, as the wiper swings across the windshield it doesn't go smoothly. It is particularly noticeable on intermittent and slow but I think they do it on fast as well. My 240 does this too and it gets pretty annoying after a while. Anyone experience this or know how to fix it?

Thanks,
Marty

Hi

I'd agree with Peter. RainX. But clean the windscreen spotless first, and I found new wiper blades made perfection.

I'm not sure whether the blades will ever wear out with RainX - you can drive a lot of the time without turning them on, except for a couple of sweeps when it first starts to rain to clear road muck off the screen.

regards

And if you really want those wipers as smooth as silk, invest in a bottle of Rain-X.

It only lasts a couple months per application, but it makes the wipers smooth and keeps every trace of rain off the windshield.

If the wipers are choppy in both directions, the glass cleaner and new blades advice should solve it. If choppy in one direction only, it usually means the wiper arm is not square to the windshield surface. It can be twisted straight by using two adjustable/crescent wrenches or vice grips - one to hold the lower part steady and avoid strain on the drive stubs.

I think I may need to add more details to my original post. After driving in the rain all day Monday I've got it clear.

It seems as though the wipers really only get choppy after they've been on for a while, maybe 1/2 an hour. They actually leave rubber residue on the windshield at the stop points.

I think my windshield was professionally treated with Rain-X. It beads like crazy and I've never treated it in the 1.5 years I've owned the car.

I also put on brand new Bosch Micro edge blades this weekend.

Could there be something with the motor or the linkage?

Thanks,
Marty

Get some "glass cleaner", which is similar to Soft Scrub, to scrub residue off the glass. And replace the wipers. You've either got some residue on the glass/blades or your wiper blades are shot.

Hello, mine have done this thing I've noticed when the wet has ended. The right side, waits behind, and eventually, it will cross the drives side one, and get tangled. It only happens when there is less and less rain occuring.

i.e. it look like clapping, then tangling. I haven't figured this out yet, because there is only one motor. It happens on all speeds.

Let me know what you find. Is this your problem also?
