O.D. relay 200 1991

I have a 91 240 with the all too familiar overdrive problem = locked out of forth gear. I checked the fuse = ok. Removed the relay and re-soldered as per advice on this forum. The switch appears to be functioning- clicks on/off evidenced in visual display and audible. Also audible beneath car at solenoid-clicking on/off. Does this suggest solenoid replacement necessary?

If the solonoid clicks then you are OK electrically. I would try a tranny flush using mobil 1 synthetic tranny fluid before messing with the solonoid.

I'd say you've made a good diagnosis. The "visual display" (upshift arrow) means that the switch is controlling the relay. And the solenoid "click" means that the solenoid and its wiring are also OK.

Beyond that, I'm not sure. A clicking solenoid, but no OD might be due to contamination in the solenoid oil passage, and respond to removal and cleaning. An archive search may give some tips on this possibility.

Is the OD light going on and off with the switch? 200 1991

You weren't really clear -- is the dash light failing to come on (which might suggest an electrical control failure -- maybe your resoldering of the relay merely wasn't successful?), or is the transmission failing to shift up despite that the light is out and, therefore, it should upshift (which might suggest a internal transmission problem, or perhaps just a solenoid failure, despite that you can hear a clicking).

    Good luck.
