Hi All:
As a followup to my post about distributors a couple of weeks ago, I started rummaging around in the garage to see what I had in the way of loose distributors. I came up with 4 so far, all different. Of course there's one in the car but thats not here at the house so its harder to check.
Got an FI distributor: 0231 163 033 JFUX 4
Vacuum chamber: 0231 146 099 JFUR 4
Vacuum chamber: 0231 146 078 JFUR 4
No Vacuum: 0231 153 009 JFR 4
I think I remember the FI dist may be from a 70 1800E, but the numbers on the rest don't cross with anything in my 544/210 parts book, and my 1800E parts book doesnt have Bosch numbers. The Bosch site that somebody cited on, I think, the 140 list doesn't talk about distributors themselves--just what tuneup parts are required for whatever year car and model.
Can anyone ID the 3 non-FI distributors I have?
What is the recommended distributor for a B20 big bore?
I also found two Allison XR 700 electronic conversions in the garage, NOS in the boxes. Any reason to think these aren't as suitable as a new Crane XR700?
Any reason to choose a Crane or Pertronix conversion...or any other brand over the others.
Thanks
Bob

I use a electronic module on my 026 dizzy by about a year (a compufire unit, similar to pertronix). It abandond me (fried) on middle of the street. I return to points and add a MSD 5 capacitive ignition external unit. On my humble opinion, it is a more suitable configuration for amazons (and msd 5 ignition - or any similar module- extends the life of points ).
On a previous post I see a photo of the engine on Barongray car. He uses another (more powerfull) capacitive ignition unit. Probably he can made a more experienced opinion about the advantages/disvantages of this little "red bricks" units.

That dizzys come from the following engines:
B20F 0 231 163 033 (engine used 71-73)
B20B 0 231 146 078 (early dizzy, engine used 68-70)
B20B 0 231 146 099 (later dizzy, engine used 68-70)
B18B 0 231 153 009 (used 66-68)
099 and 078 have the same timing curve. B20F was on the 1800ES (the last model using B20 engines).

Thanks for the excellent info regarding original distributor applications... I'm curious now, the distributor I was running in my wagon is not on the list. Any idea what Volvo this part might have originally been installed in?
0 231 170 086 JFU4
Looks like an aluminum body, with vacumn retard. Any info on this mystery distributor appreciated.

That dizzy was used on B20 engines some time after the amazons vehicles production was finished (earlier versions of 240 vehicles was fitted with B20 engines):
B20A 0 231 170 086 (74-81, on 242, 244, 245 early models)

Thanks for your help, Joaquin. The 123 ignition site is very interesting. The web translator that I used was able to translate enough of the words so I could understand what they were saying.
Best wishes

I remember (on the back of my cerebellum) something about Crane adquire Allison. Old pals, please, confirm or deny it.

Probably the Crane gadgets are a later version of the Allison gadgets...
(merchandise bussines, relabeling, etc., etc.), then, the old Allisons are good as the Cranes...

Can a Bosch 009 centrifical advance distributor be used on a B20?
|

009 run clockwise, B18 and B20 engines run distribution axis counterclockwise. I believe the weights will be male a weird curve rotating on the wrong direction.

My excuses, I believe you refer the popular Bosch 009 for VW beetles (no vacuum). Also exist the Bosch 0 231 153 009 (used on B18B 1966-68). Of curse, the 0 231 159 009 run counterclockwise.

Man, with I had YOUR "cultch pile!"
Old vs new... only difference is minor in the construction with (perhaps) updates to help it work better with less fiddling or be more rugged in the case of idiot home installers (like me;). Otherwise functionality should be identical.
Sry on ID of units, nothing to help you with there.

I've been running an old Allison XR700 for about 3 years now on the PV. Nary a hiccup yet. I may change it soon when getting Megasqurt to run the advance, however.

We just pulled out the points and put a Pertronix Ignitor in my 444. When I did this I discovered the distributor gear was broken. So that was a little disturbing. Apparently some have added a sleeve as this is a common occurance?
But back to the electronic ignition. Had to do a bit of filing to get it to fit right, although they claimed it should "drop in with no modifications."
So far it's running good. Pricey though...

I suffer a similar trouble two years ago. One weight into the dizzy lost the spring, blocking the rotation at 40 kph and the gear was broken (now that dizzy is a donor for her brother, and also I adquire 2 dizzy gears - one for replacement, another as a reserve - on our local indian car part gray market.
Since then, I make the maintenance (dizzy dismount and oiling, test of ignition wires and cap, check of condenser and points, dwell angle - on old dizzys please dont believe on points spacing-, coil primary & secondary omhs, ignition key, tach, and capacitive discharge MSD5 ignition unit) of my ignition system every oil filter change. It take 2 hours and 1 very cool beer.
btw: After the maintenance, this is as the dizzy looks:
