Engine head removal 700 1986

Decided to replace blown head gasket on my 1986 740T.
All went well, except I can't loosen the 14mm head bolts.
I'm using 3/8 socket set, and the darn bolts won't budge.
What's the secret to this ?
They are supposed to be tightened to approx. 45 lbs.
They feel mora like 150 ?!
Should I try 1/2 inch socket set ?
I already broke 2 14 mm 3/8 sockets. I'm afraid to continue.
Guy at SEARS knows me. I don't know if there is a limit on
the number of free Craftsman replacement sets...

    Hello;
Outside of the head bolts how hard was it to remove the head. Is there a step by step post in any of these forums that I can read to help me to do it myself?
    Thanks Pat

you will need to buy three 1/2" 14mm sockets... two that you will break and the third an impact socket.

I used the impact socket, attached to a 24" breaker bar, with four foot steel pipe on the end of that.

The pipe I got at home depot for something like $4.

I used a King-Kong size breaker bar on my 240. The head came off with two casualties; a cheap chinese made socket went from a 6 point to a 12 point and a Craftsman socket cracked in two places.

Use a quality 1/2 inch six-point impact socket for this and a large breaker bar.

True the head bolts are tighten to 45 ft-lbs. The next step is to tighten the bolts an additional 90 degrees. Why are you using a 3/8 drive socket? Use a 1/2 inch drive and a breaker bar, that should break the head bolts free.

in order to get head bots off with a 3/8 drive socket you would have to be a true monster. I am 185lbs of average strength and it required a 24 inch breaker bar and the use of a piece of pipe to extend mine. i use the pipe to apply a more even and controled pressure. this combine with the help of a buddy to assure that you keep everthing straight while applying the pressue can save a lot of time with broken head bolts. Here is an example of one of the reasons that we always use 6 point tools on 6 point fasteners whenever possible.....cause they work better. good luck....
