It sounds like a linkage issue bushings and pins. If this is a used car someone may have put bolts or screws in where pins belong does the shifter feel sloppy if so check these things out. Jack up the car or put on a lift. When replacing the little bushings soak them in hot water first there easier to install when there soft. The pins are a certain size they are a little hard to get in but worth the effort. Don't use screws or bolts constant movement will chew up the new bushings.
