m410/m400 bellhousings 1800

is it possible to install a m400/m410 belhousing on a more modern m46 (240 series) transmission? I'm trying to install a b20, or maybe a b30 engine in my 1980 264GL, and im running out of options.

Where are you located?

I'd imagine that you'd be able to put a B30 + M410 into
a 240 without a huge amount of work. A B20 would also be
an option -- it was done by the factory in 1975.

If you've got a 240, though, there are probably lots of
donor 240s with B21s in salvage yards, and that would be
the most direct path to the open road.

Im located in Bloomington Indiana USA, although I'm not too sure what that has to do with my question.
of course I could put a regular 240 engine in my car, but even after overlooking the fact I dont like the b21 engine, theres still the fact that I want this car to be a little bit different than every other 240 on the road.

V6 to B21/23 conversions are not uncommon... Going back to a pushrod engine in your car would be a lot of work, and would be sorta like a tuner fella getting rid of his dohc v8 to install a flathead 6.

Granted, I prefer a flathead 6, but the newer unit is better.

AFAIK the B21 and the B20 have the same engine/bellhousing bolt patterns. So you could use an M40/M41 on the B20 in your 240 - with a little fabrication (possibly) of a driveshaft.

The M400/410 does not have the same trans/bellhousing mounting as the M46. However, there are a *small* number of B20/M46 bellhousings around - they were made for a short time in 1975 (IIRC) during the switch over from 140 to 240 production. Due to their built up supplies, I think the earliest '75 240's had B20 engines and M41/M40 transmissions. They ran out of M41/M40 transmissions before they ran out of B20 engines, so produciton continued for a while with B20 engines and M45/M46 (not sure) transmissions. Then the B20's ran out and they were B21/M46. So for that short time they made B20/M46 bellhousings. Of course, now everyone wants them to put an M46 into their older B20 engined car, so once you find one it's a bit expensive.

Although the demand for those rare bellhousings might be lessening now that people are strating to put T5 and various Toyota trnsmissions on their Volvos (OHV and OHC) - which isn't a half bad idea for your little project .
