SSTEF and B21A drivers 200

Hello all,

A follow up to my B21A JFU4 Distributor Conversion to B21E JGFU4 electronic. It worked well for two weeks, without fail. I actually improved mileage. Yesterday, I needed to make photocopies, 5 minutes away. Should have walked, but it was threatening rain. After I made my photocopies, the car would not start with dynamite! I did the usual checks, Air, Fuel, Spark. I noticed the B21E distributor provided a yellowish piss-weak spark, when I pulled #1 Spark Plug. Usually, when one just pulls the #1 Spark Plug wire it will make a popping sound and spark from the end of the Spark Plug Wire to the Valve Cover. Mine didn't. That's when I decided to check it with the Spark Plug removed.

I had a spare control module, spark plugs, ballast resitor, coil. Nothing seemed to make any difference. Does anyone have any clues. Could the Induction Coil, inside the Distributor cause a weak spark?

Believe it or not, I installed the OEM B21A Coil, Resistor, and Distributor, set at TDC, and it started right up. Unbelievable.

I checked the Ballast Resistor and Coil, against the specs and they seemed ok.

What kind of mileage did you get with the Zenith CD? and now?
I'm in 18 mpg hell with my SU, so will require rebuild, which I
suppose is reasonable after 24 years.

Did you use the same ign coil and ballast resistor on both distributors?

(According to Haynes), between '79 and '84, coil resistances for contact breaker systems are the same as for breakerless systems. But ballast resistances are different Ie. 1.3 ohms vs 0.9 ohms. So could use the same coil.

(Didn't notice mention of differences in distributors.)

      Hello Trev

Thanks for that. Yep, I used the same Part Number Coil, because they both do for the B21A and B21E. I use Part Number 0 227 900 014 for the B21A and 0 227 900 010 for the B1E. I have spares of everything and swapped all parts, before removing the B21E Distributor and replacing it with the conventional B21A Dissy.
