16' wheels 200 1990

I recently replaced the stock 15" wheels on my 90' 240 with 16" alloys off an 86' 745ti. The car rides very nicely with the new alloys and michelins, but i was wondering if the bigger rims can create any problems?

As long as you size your tires to get within a few percent of the overall diameter of the stock size, and don't exceed 215 mm as a max tire width, you should be OK.

Your speedo will read slightly slower than your actual speed, cause your car will go further for every rev. And you'll need slightly more torque to get the wheel moving.

Where did you get that notion?

Needing more power is only if it got heavier ... and alloys are lighter than steel.

Rim diameter and overall circumference are not related. When you go bigger on rims, the profiles go lower.

-- Kane ... hence the rubber band tires on the 20+ rims.

    I've got Hydras, 16x6.5'x25mm 200 1990

I've got Hydra alloys (6.5x16"x25mmET) that I got a couple of months ago and that I'm going to put on my 240 after the winter (when I remove my current snow tires).

I've mounted them, and observed how they fit:
    1) One of the writers was right about the inside wheel weights -- there's no clearance for them along the inboard edge. You must use "tape weights" instead.
    2) But another writer was wrong about the rear collision piece on the rear calipers, which he told you to hacksaw off -- they're completely clear.

Caveat: of course, my findings apply solely to my alloys (note the specs, above) -- your 16" alloys may have different width, and might have a different offset (although probably not, as these Hydras are also from a 700-900 series car like the 745 you mentioned, and these regularly have an ET of 25mm). However, I don't think they're the same alloys, because my alloys have a cover over the bolts so they aren't visible.

If the offset is pushing it stay away from balance weights that clamp to the bead. Also, on some 240s unbolt the rear caliper horn and either shim it inboard or toss it overboard. That horn will rip balance weights right of the rims if it does not drag on the rim.

With any larger rim comes a shorter sidewall ... just avoid potholes and be more careful around curbs and you'll be fine.

What is under the 1990 hub cap? I love the painted rims on my 85, but have no idea what the rims look like under the hubcaps on newer bricks.

The wheels i have now are alloys - no hubcaps, but the newer 90's stock steel 15" wheels i have seen look ok actually. I don't understand why people put the cheap plastic walmart covers over their wheels - it looks SO cheap. I'd rather ride around on rusty rims...
