Windshield Wipers & Horn 200 1982

A few days ago when my car sat all night in below-freezing temperatures, my horn and windshield wipers wouldn't operate.

Later that day, when it had warmed up, they worked just fine.

A few days later, in near-freezing temps (but not as cold as before), they had stopped working AGAIN! I had to miss work today due to having no wipers in the rain.

Could it be a fuse? Could it be electrical? I need to fix this CHEAP! I'm only working a temp job and am planning to move... to a coastal city. :'(

Dawn

P.S. I thought my car was front-wheel drive. Therefore, when I drove it across country, I put the newer tires on the front; older on the back. Was this wrong???

That's a tricky question. If you want good acceleration, then put 'em on the rear.

If you want good braking/steering, put 'em up front as that's where most of the braking/steering is done. But if your alignment is out, then those new tires will get old quicker then the rear ones (assuming you can't/don't burn rubber with your 240).

First http://www.volvotechinfo.com and see if you can obtain an Owner's Manual for your car.

Check the fusebox. The inside of the cover of the box has a listing of which fuse protects which circuit. Both the horn and the wipers might be on Fuse #2.

Volvo original fuses have a tendency to get oxidized on their tips, where they are held in the clips. Use a fingertip and "spin" each fuse in their clips. that will remove any oxidization. IN fact, do this with any kind of electrical problem.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

After doing some research, I checked the fuse box under my steering wheel. I removed the fuse for the horn/wipers. I cleaned it, and replaced it. No luck. I noticed there were about 4 fuses at the bottom that appeared to be extras. They weren't "connected" to anything. I used one of those (same color to be safe), and it worked!

      WOO HOO!!!

Extra fuses are cheap, you need to have some on hand. They are, as you surmised, color coded, so be sure to observe that. The thin metal strip across the face is the actual fuse, so when they blow, it's fairly obvious. You'd probably do well to spin all the fuses, that is a weak point on these cars. Just be careful you don't break the metal strips in the process!
