do 6-cyl springs on 4 cyl car affect ride quality? 200 1981

My '81 GLE originally came w/ 6 cyl engine, automatic trans. The 1st owner swapped in a straight shift 4 speed and 4 cyl engine, but left the original springs. My next project is improving ride quality. Should I replace the springs w/ the ones meant for a 4 cyl engine?

The tie rods, u-joints, ball joints, steering link bushings and rear springs and tires are all new. Still need to replace strut inserts, upper strut mount and all rear bushings, front sway bar.

When we built our 240 rally car, we picked up a pair of front springs from a 260 to raise up the front end. It lifted the car about 2". If you want stock ride height, some 4 cyl springs are called for.

The V6 was NOT heavier than the four cylinder engines, mostly because of the all alloy design (compared to Volvo's own iron cast engines) but also because of the over all weaker french construction philosophy, as we've learned through the years... Actually it was a tad lighter but six cylinder cars were loaded with other stuff and therefore heavier in the end anyway.

Automatics were heavy enough (compared to manual 4-speeds) to justify other spring ratings from the factory, though. This is a matter of personal preferences - just remember that new springs could feel pretty harsh when replacing old, soft ones. Handling will almost certainly be improved while comfort might not.

Btw - don't mix this up with the VW/Audi inline diesel six which was a lot heavier than the other 240 setups.

As before stated, ride does not appear to be changed, but car sits taller. I put diesel front springs in my old 78 because the 4 cyl springs were tired. It just sat taller.
