tranny work weekend planning 200

Hi all,

I'm about to tackle a kickdown cable replacement this weekend. I just had the tranny serviced two weeks ago (pan dropped, filter change, arrgh!), but I'm going to do this one myself. After researching the faq's and posts, I have a couple of questions.

- Should I still replace the gasket if its only two weeks old?

- How many quarts should I buy for a pan removal service?

- Should I go synthetic? If you don't completly flush it, can you just mix the synthetic with the regular fluid that's in there? Is it worth it?

Thanks!

Joel

I had a hell of a time when I replaced mine (85 245DL AW70). The problem I had was getting the end of the housing with the O ring to go in to the top of the trans. case. I tried several types of lube on the O ring and even took it (O ring) off at one time to make sure the cable end would even go in to the trans. The whole time, you are having to deal with the fact that the cable is already attached to its mechanism?? in the trans. and there is also trans fluid dripping on you. I tried twisting it, prying it, cussing at it, but it still would not go in. I finally was able to pry it down but I didn't feel right about it.
The problem, I think, was that the part was not an original Volvo part so the tolerence was not exact.
Also, replace the trans pan gasket. I tried reusing the old one and it leaked.

I used the FAQ's on this site. You have to go to the 700 FAQ's but it's the same procedure.

Anyway....the cable didn't fix the shift problem I was having. I replaced the trans. last summer with a low mileage unit.

Good luck

Purchase a lot of good paper towels. The transmission bottom (valve body, etc) tends to continue weeping after draining. Use the towels to "dab" the fluid droplets from the bottom.

Good luck, and let us know how the job goes. I'm replacing a rack this weekend and I

    dread
trying to get that bottom u-joint off the old rack input shaft. The week after that, I have to drop the auto tranny on the same car to do the rear main seal!

If it was me, I would not re-use the gasket. Last time I dropped the pan, it took approx 3 qts. Syn and regular fluids are compatable, you would have to decide if it is worth it to you. Good luck!
